On the one hand, unfortunately, animals are euthanized every week at local animal shelters. On the other hand, reading that just made me feel sick. *IMO* what they were doing was WRONG!!!!!

By Jackie on Saturday, January 27, 2007 - 11:54 am:

It was a big thing here when it first happened. The PETA people thing they did no wrong by this. Animals euthanized happens so much. I just didnt understand what they were trying to prove by doing this?

Here are two additional articles:

And an article/column? in the San Francisco Gate that asserts that PETA's "kill" rate was more than 85% in 2003 in Virginia, while the "Norfolk (Va.) SPCA found adoptive homes for 73 percent of its animals and Virginia Beach SPCA adopted out 66 percent". SFGate

Personally, I have no use for PETA. They talk about anti-cruelty, but there have been instances, for example, where they raided a mink farm and released the minks into the wild in the middle of winter, where they were certainly unlikely to survive.

I am a firm believer that anti-cruelty laws must be beefed up and strictly enforced, and am pleased that Pennsylvania recently changed both its laws and the structure of the enforcement agency to crack down on puppy mills (for which Pennsylvania is infamous, especially in the Lancaster area). But talking about anti-cruelty and killing 85% of the animals brought to what people thought were shelters that would strive for adoption - that's not anti-cruelty. I think the writer in the SFGate is correct in saying that PETA thinks animals are "better dead than fed".

I recently listened to a discussion on NPR about laws and animals. One part of the discussion was on laws banning specific breeds of dogs - particularly pit bulls. The PETA representative took the position that all pit bulls should be confiscated and euthanized - on the theory that they were always mistreated and abused and were better off dead. The SPCA representative, on the other hand, had the position that pit bulls that showed aggressive tendencies should, of course, be euthanized, but that there also needs to be a lot of education about the right way to treat and handle animals, and that pit bulls are no more dangerous, when raised and trained properly, than any other breed. (The SPCA rep also referred to the furor in the past about the dangers of, for examples, German Shepherds, Dobermans, Rottweilers, and various breeds of spaniels.)

Most PETA people are just crazy and over the top. I am animal lover, but they certainly go way overboard on everything they do. I hope they get jail time for what they did. I know many things they do go unreported. I am glad this case came to light.

I think PETA is way over the top, too.

It's interesting to note that in the van in which they picked up the animals, the police found bottles of Ketamine and Phenobarbitol - all you need to more or less paralyze an animal and then shoot the phenobarb into a vein to stop the heart. In Virginia, where they were arrested, those are Class 3 Narcoties, and can only be used in a facility where a veterinarian is present. In Pennsylvania they can be used by a veterinary technician, but only under the supervision/orders of a vet, and can only be ordered/purchased by a veterinary facility with a licensed vet on staff.

They were found NOT GUILTY, I am so MAD..just saw it on the news this morning.

By Hol on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 04:57 pm:

That's sickening. What was their motive, since PETA claims to love animals? By killing them, they took away any chance that they might have had of being placed into adoptive homes if they had satyed where they were. How is that rescuing animals?

I think they are just nuts, even for PETA people.

Sickening. And Ginny, what's even more worrisome about them having those drugs is they are commonly turned into street drugs, especially Ketamine. These people sound twisted, and I thank god for no-kill shelters and generous people who support them.
