Do you think criminals people who create crimes whether minor or major have it to easy? What do you see as a good system? Do you think it will ever change. I know you all will give me long answers and opinions. I look forward to finding out how everyone feels about this :)

I do have answers to this I just have to take my kids to school.

Catherin, I'm confused. Do you mean before they get caught, or after they are caught and sentenced and sent to prison?

YUCK! I just read what I wrote and it didn't say what I meant. I meant people who commit crimes and are sent to jail. Do you think they have it too easy. That they have to many priveleges? What do you see as a good system to deal with people who break the law? Should it start at the courts? Do we need stiffer penalties or harsher jails?

Does this make more sense? (sorry it took so long to get back to you dh and I had date night last night)

Do you think people who commit crimes and are sent to jail have it too easy? Yes!! My BIL is a repeat offender. He has been in jail more than he has been out for the last 20 or so years.
That they have to many priveleges? Yes!! This same BIL had the "run of the jail" the last time that he was in. And I say this not from heresay, but from actually seeing him. We went to visit him and he had the keys to alot of the rooms at the jail (supposedly because of good behaviour). This is a man that most of the officers know on a first name basis. What purpose does it serve to send a person to a place where they get 3 square meals, a bed, and free rent?
What do you see as a good system to deal with people who break the law? I think that life in prison should mean just that. I know there are some instances where life in prison means 20 (or maybe it's 25) years. What kind of sentence is that? And I think that repeat offenders should have to go to prison for a longer sentence than 18 months or a few years.
Should it start at the courts? Yes
Do we need stiffer penalties or harsher jails? Maybe a bit of both.
Does this make more sense? :) Yep! hehe

I do think that a lot of prison and jail systems are too easy on thier prisoners. But, I also think there are some strict ones out there too. My brother was placed in jail in a town close to where I live. He is no angel, but the treatment he received was terrible also. He spent 3 months in the county jail and when he was released he had lost over 30 pounds. He said that some of the food served was rotted, and most of the time the only thing decent to eat was the apple that was given with each meal. He was arrested for driving with a suspended license, and it was'nt his first time so that is why he had to spend time in jail.

140,000 people in life sentences - how can that be? Watching CSPAN especially the Washington Journal always gives me something troubling to think and pray about. Two nights ago it was a man from the Sentencing Project. In the mid 1980's we had 12,000 people on life sentences and that was the heyday of Crack Gang killings etc. Now we have passed all these mandatory sentencing laws and we have over 11 times as many people in the same position including a lot of kids and tons of private for profit prisons and juvenile detention facilites being traded on the stock exchanges.

Evidently no other country jails people in the numbers or for the length of sentencing that we do.

I posted this here because I think the discussion hasn't changed that much in 8 years either.

Anybody else see this man, Ryan King from The Sentencing Project - what do you think?
