Surrogate pregnancy
Moms View Message Board: The Kitchen Table (Debating Board): Surrogate pregnancy
NEWSWEEK ran a story about surrogate mothers, several of whom are women married to active military men. Newsweek Ellen Goodman has written a thoughtful column about "outsourcing" surrogate pregnancy to India and other "third world" countries. Goodman What do you think?
I don't think that I could ever do it, but I am glad there are people out there that can. As someone who longed for a baby more than anything in the world and went through 4 years of infertility, I know what it is like to want one so bad and not have one. I was lucky enough to be able to finally conceive and have dd. I think it takes a special person to do it and I wouldn't want to stand in the way of any agreement they come up with between the "parents" and the surrogate. Frankly, it isn't one bit of my business!!
I couldn't be a surrogate, a list of long reasons, but it isn't the right choice for me. However I have a cousin, who is my age, who seriously looked into it. They are having big finacial issues, you can get paid quite a bit to do so, and it seemed like a good answer. They are finished with their family and she is still young enough to do it. After she had her first two kids, she donated several eggs to a friend, who went on to have a son. For me it is so weird, this boy looks like her son, she is good friends with the mom and dad. I don't think I could let go of those maternal feelings, but she doesn't have any problems. So I think she could surrogate just fine. I do actually have less moral issues with surrogacy than I do with the egg donating thing. Just because you hatch a baby, doesn't biologically make it yours, and that is where things get fuzzy for me.
