What is wrong with Child Protective Services!
Moms View Message Board: The Kitchen Table (Debating Board): What is wrong with Child Protective Services!
In Maryland 1 month old twins died at the hands of their parents. In their 1 month of life they suffered fractured skulls & ribs as well as severe malnutrition. Five months before their deaths their 2 year old sister was taken away because of abuse & neglect. Am I wrong in thinking red flags should have been up. Shouldn't they have been taken away at birth. Shouldn't some one have been watching making sure they were safe? I read this in my local paper The News Record. I can not understand why!
CPS is a giant beaurocracy (sp). They have all sorts of rules that don't makes sense. They actually investigated a family member after a terrible tragedy in which a child died. This family member was trying to mourn and CPS was trying to investigate to see if they should take away the surviving child. The case has since been closed as unfounded, but have they no respect? The family member is a good parent and had nothing whatsoever to do with the tragedy. (I'm being vague, I know, but I want as little identifying info here as possible). Wouldn't it be nice if instead of spending hours investigating homeschooling moms, which they do quite alot, they would seal up the cracks in their system? Ame
All I can say is don't get me started!! CPS does some backwards things!! I agree with Ame, but will say this in the defense of the agency. Their workers are overloaded with cases. The system has gotten to the point where they don't seem to know up from down. They can make a huge deal out of nothing, but ignore something life threatening. It STINKS!!! My heart mourns for those babies. What a damn shame!!
If one child was taken away for neglect you would think all the children would be taken away. Makes sense to me.
CPS is only as strong as the people who work for it. Many people are truly caring individuals who want to make a differnce in a child's life. Others are burn-out and worn out from a system that is rarely rewarding. It must be hard for them to catch every child. Also, it seems like people are hesitant to report what they feel is a dangerous situation for a child. Many think that it isn't any of their business. In fact, I know a girl who thinks a friend of her's is abusing and neglecting her child, yet she has done nothing about it. These are the people that make me angry. If you honestly have a reason to be suspicious, for the safety of the child you should report it. It makes me sad to think of all the children who slip through the cracks because of poor investigation or followup, but thank god for the ones who have been pulled out of horrible situations.
