I am speechless.

Moms View Message Board: The Kitchen Table (Debating Board): I am speechless.
By Colette on Friday, July 11, 2003 - 05:44 pm:

I can't believe I just read this.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/07/11/susan.smith.ap/index.html

I will never as long as I live forget this story.

By Semperspencer on Friday, July 11, 2003 - 05:49 pm:

Disgusting, that's all I can say.

By Colette on Friday, July 11, 2003 - 05:49 pm:

now, I just went to the main web site and I am even more dumbfounded.

By Ginnyk on Friday, July 11, 2003 - 06:38 pm:

It may sound strange coming from me, but when I think of people like Susan Smith and others who deliberately kill their children (and are not themselves suffering from a mental illness), I am reminded that when a farmer had a chicken-killing dog, he'd tie the dead chicken around the dog's neck until it pretty much rotted, to punish and remind the dog.
Maybe people who kill their children, no matter what the prison sentence, should have pictures of their children or models of grave stones put in a chain around their necks that they can't remove, and can't tuck under their shirts.

Sickening......................

How *sad*, she doesn't want to be *judged* for what she did. Give me a break! It was legally, ethically, humanly, morally WRONG. I can't imagine what kind of person would actually want to communicate with her.

Ginny, I like your idea. I also feel there should be a mandatory sterilization law for people who kill or sexually molest children. JMO

By Jenn on Friday, July 11, 2003 - 07:05 pm:

I like your idea also. That is truly sick. I went to check out the web site and I wanted to puke. Who would come up with a thing like that? Saying that these people are lonely and all this other bs. They did the crime and they need to pay and do the time.

By Semperspencer on Friday, July 11, 2003 - 07:27 pm:

Karen, I agree about the mandatory sterilization.

By Annie2 on Friday, July 11, 2003 - 08:07 pm:

I agree with mandatory sterilization... better yet, castrate the males. Less testerone, less sexual drive. I also agree with the "Scarlett Letter" form of punishment.
My big question is why does a convicted baby killer have access to a computer? She can not be rehabilitated to re-enter society, since she is sentenced to life.
This is an example of a clear case where the death penalty would have been more punishment for this monster, than life in prison. IMO

By Karen55 on Friday, July 11, 2003 - 08:21 pm:

Sort of ironic, isn't it? It peeves me to think there are bright kids, young people with brilliant minds out there, who are underprivileged, have no access to computers, etc. and people like Susan Smith who are in prison for KILLING KIDS have computers at their disposal, email, and are running ads because they want *friends*.

HELLLLLLO!!!! What's wrong with this picture????

I know that the death penalty is a hot-button-topic, but I agree with you on this one. My opinion is that ANYone who kills kids should get the death penalty.

And in another direction, what would happen if this woman sleeps with another guard and manages to get herself pregnant again? What rights to the baby would she have, or claim to have?

By Semperspencer on Friday, July 11, 2003 - 11:01 pm:

Oh, Karen, you're right! I never even thought of that!

This was on AOL this morning:

Site Asks Smith to Withdraw Ad

COLUMBIA, S.C. (July 11) - The Web site that accepted a personal ad from convicted child killer Susan Smith seeking pen pals from her prison cell asked her Friday to withdraw the ad because the result has been ``kind of a freak show.''

``However, if Susan wants to keep the ad, we won't force her to get rid of it,'' said Jason Roberts, a spokesman for the Edgewater, Fla.-based writeaprisoner.com.

Roberts said Smith's online ad has gotten hundreds of responses but was becoming a distraction from the site's mission of helping other inmates make contacts in the outside world. He also said the media attention to the ad was overwhelming.

Smith, who is serving a life sentence, gained notoriety in 1994 for going on national television to tearfully plead for the return of her missing sons. She later admitted strapping 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alex into their car seats and rolling the sleeping boys into a lake.

``I hope to receive letters from those who are not judgmental and who are sincere,'' reads the ad, accompanied by a photo of a smiling Smith, 31, wearing sweat pants marked ``SC Department of Corrections.''

In the $40 advertisement, posted last month, Smith says, ``I will always hurt for the pain I've caused so many, especially my children.''

``I love rainbows, Mickey Mouse, the beach, mountains and waterfalls,'' the ad reads. ``I consider myself to be sensitive, caring and kind-hearted. I'm currently serving a life sentence on the charge of murder.''

The ad ends with the words: ``May God bless each one of you!''

Corrections Director Jon Ozmint confirmed Friday that Smith paid for the ad with a check from her South Carolina Department of Corrections account. Prisoners often have accounts for the small amount of money they earn doing jobs behind bars.

Smith's personal life has made headlines before. Two prison guards were disciplined for having sex with Smith three years ago. One was sentenced to 90 days in jail, the other was put on probation.
