Prayers for a friend's Dh

Moms View Message Board: Prayer Requests: Prayers for a friend's Dh
By Cat on Thursday, June 14, 2007 - 11:49 am:

A good friend of mine called a little while ago. She's bringing her kids over because her husband was thrown off a horse and is on his way to the hospital. Her dh's friend called her and just said he was thrown, got knocked out for 15-30 seconds, may have broken some ribs and had blood coming out of his ear. She sounded really upset, understandable. She didn't want to take the kids to the hospital. She and her husband are both chiropractor and if he can't work she'll have to take over all his patients which will put a LOT of stress on her. He also specializes in horses and she really can't adjust them so they'll loose a lot of business (they have their own office, just the two of them). Please pray he's okay. They're both really good friends of mine and my dh's. Thanx

I'll have their family in my prayers. Please keep us updated, Cat.

My friend (F) just called and said her dh (R) has a fractured skull, some bleeding on the brain (they don't know how serious yet) and some broken ribs, possibly his collar bone and maybe even his shoulder blade. No one actuall saw him fall so they don't know how it happened. He was on a ladder adjusting the horse when it happened and he thinks the horses legs got tangled in the ladder, but he doesn't remember much. They're waiting for the neurosurgeon and he'll do another CT scan and they're going to keep him at least overnight, probably longer. F said R is awake and ticked. We'll see what happens. I wanted to update you. Thanx for the prayers, Tink. Keep 'em coming.

F called me again. The kids will be spending the night here and she's staying in Denver with R. He broke 9 ribs and his collar bone, plus the skull fracture. She said he's in a lot of pain from the broken ribs and she's hoping she can bring him home tomorrow. We're headed to their house to get the kids things. She told their son (9yo) that dad had broken some ribs and may have a head injury, but he'd be okay. All the dd knows is what the rest of us have said and she's overheard. She hasn't asked any questions yet. Thanx for all the prayers.

I continue to pray for R, F and the kids. You're a good friend, Cat.

In my thoughts and prayers.. Quick healing.. and a huge OUCH!! he has to be in some pain...

By Bellajoe on Friday, June 15, 2007 - 03:01 pm:

awww, i hope he's going to be o.k. That sounds awful. Ouch, 9 RIBS? I can't imagine breaking ribs and the collar bone it must hurt to just breathe! Poor guy. I hope he heals quickly and well and can go back to work. My prayers are with them.

By Cat on Friday, June 15, 2007 - 03:21 pm:

It doesn't look like he'll be released today. He's not eating, and when he did try he couldn't keep it down. F said he gets dizzy sitting up or trying to stand. She's going to try and make it home this afternoon sometime so she can get the kids from the day camp they're in (I dropped them off this morning for her--it's only a mile from here), take her son to a birthday party, try to get some things done at home and then go back up there later tonight. The other person R was with yesterday morning dropped R's truck off at their house for them. That's one less thing for them to worry about and she was very happy to hear that. The kids are okay. F talked to them both on the phone last night. It was both sad and funny when the little girl asked, "Did he break his skull?" But they're taking it very well. They know dad's going to be okay. I wish there was more I could do. Father's day is Sunday and I'm sure F had plans for it. Hopefully R will be out by then. I talked to F about noon today and they were waiting for the nuerologist again. R's going to be really sore for quite a while. Thanx again so much for all the prayers.

F came and got her kids things and will be taking them back up to Denver tonight. The latest CT was clear so now they're just trying to get him eating, using the bathroom and get his pain under control. F said when they can do that he'll be able to come home. It's going to be rough for a while (she'll be working a lot, taking all her patients and all of his, too), but her parents are coming to town Tuesday (been planned for months) for a month. That will help her a LOT!!! Hopefully he'll be able to come home tomorrow. :)

Wow, how scary! Was he wearing a helmet? I hope he's going to be okay. That does sound painful!

By Karen~admin on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 08:30 am:

Wow, prayers headed their way!!!!! Vomiting and nausea are common with head injuries. I'm a little surprised they want to release him so soon, if he has swelling and bleeding in the brain. Jason had a bad concussion when he was about 15, and they sent him home, and 2 days later he had to go back and was in the hospital for a week on IV steroids for the swelling, and to be sure the bleed stopped. That is nothing to mess around with!

Broken ribs are painful. I fractured ONE rib when I was a child, and it hurts every time you breathe. I can't imagine having NINE broken ribs. Poor guy!!! And a broken collar bone on top of it all.

I hope he's able to get his pain and nausea under control, it sounds like he's in for *quite* a recovery.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 09:26 am:

Dawn, would he be wearing a helmet doing and adjustment to the horse? My understanding is he wasn't riding. He was standing on a ladder along side the horse.. and I am thinking a helmet probably would have been a good idea... Scary how things you normally do can have such major consiquences..

Hope he did well through the night.

By Cat on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 11:03 am:

He wasn't wearing a helmet. Two people actually saw him fly through the air and land. Normally, he's ready to jump off the ladder if anything happens, but this horse seemed to be doing really well and its leg got caught and before R could jump the horse upset the ladder. It happened too fast. From the way the people said he landed (on the back of his shoulder) I'm not sure a helmet would have helped anyway. The skull fracture is behind and below his right ear--not somewhere a helmet usually covers.

The latest CT scan doesn't show any bleeding on the brain or swelling. F did say it'd be okay if he comes home tomorrow (Sunday) instead of today, but she does want him home sometime this weekend and R really wants out of the hospital. F was SO upset yesterday because she'd overheard some of the nurses talking about how chiropractics is a quack profession and his adjusting a horse was just proof of that and then laughing. She was SO angry, but she didn't say anything to them--probably because she was too uset and mad. R and a friend of his actually travel around CO and surrounding states to rodeos quite frequently adjusting the horses and the riders. R also adjusted our dog, Bean, after he fell off the back of the couch and wouldn't use one of his back legs. The next day he was walking on it again. Sorry, I didn't mean for this to turn into a "wonders of chiropractic" post, because I really don't believe it is a cure all--it's not. But it definately has its place. Even F and R will tell you that. R actually had 25 horses to adjust Thursday--this was the very first horse of the day.

We're all just really glad R's going to be okay.

I thought he was riding. The first post said he was thrown off a horse! I didn't realize he was on a ladder. I hope he is okay, after all this. That was rather rude of the nurses. One of the clinic doctors I work with, actually sends people to a chiropracter, sometimes, so I won't make fun of it.

By Cat on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 03:51 pm:

F called about 1/2 hour ago. R's home and resting comfortably with lots of pain meds. Thanx for all the prayers. He'll have at least 6-8 weeks of recovery, but it could have been much worse.

By Tink on Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 07:41 pm:

It could have been so much worse. I'm so happy to hear that he's already home and getting to rest in his own bed.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Tuesday, June 19, 2007 - 10:23 pm:

Yes, I am glad he is home too... Prayers for quick healing..

By Kaye on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 - 01:14 am:

Crazy, glad to hear he is doing a bit better and is HOME!

I had never heard of a horse chiropracter before, interesting.
