Scariest day of my life!!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive March 2006: Scariest day of my life!!
By Jtsmom on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 - 10:11 pm:

Today, me and the boys were playing outside, enjoying this beautiful weather (finally!!). The boys were playing in the driveway, I was not far from them. Luke got up and started walking down the driveway to the street, I got up and started to walk toward him to get him and he took off running. I will never understand how a not even 2 yr old out ran me, but anyway, he ran right into the street before I could get him and all I could see the whole time I was running was this car coming out of the corner of my eye. He was running and the car was coming and I couldn't get to him. I can't even type this without crying! I managed to snatch the back of his shirt in time, the car slammed on breaks. Luckly it was a responsible person driving pretty slow, if it had been like most of the people that drive through here I don't know if I would have saved him. I can't even think about it. The lady stopped and I told her that I was sorry, I felt like the worst mother in the world. I keep thinking what if something had happened to my baby. I won't get any sleep tonight. Every time I close my eyes, it replays in my head over and over.

Ugh. I can't even imagine!!! Makes us all want to live on a farm off waaaayyy in the woods, no? I'm so sorry this happened!!! :(

Wow, how scary! Good thing they were driving slow! Kids can be unpredictable sometimes!

By Jtsmom on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 - 10:27 pm:

I keep thinking, what if someone else was watching them and were not paying as close attention as I was. He would have surely been hit. The only person I have ever left him with is my niece, but I know she gets distracted at times. He has never even been with DH by himself, since he has been gone since Luke was 6 months old. I bet I will get some complex now and won't let anyone watch him. I had the worst panic attack after it all happened. I couldn't catch my breath, I thought I was going to pass out. As you can tell, I am still worked up over it.

Joelle, As I was reading this I was replaying what happened with Jade 2 weeks ago. She has figured out how to open the deadbolt on the front door. I was in the kitchen and heard the door open. Thinking it was Rich coming in I did nothing he was outside. Then he came in through the backdoor and I paniced I dropped dinner on the floor and took off through the livingroom just in time to see her get to the end of the driveway and look back I bolted out the door yelling at her to stop and she took off she beat me all the way across the street. Our neighborhood is like yours people fly around my corner of the street never ver doing the slow speed limit they are suppose. I caught her i nthe parking lot at the school across from me. I was in tears all I could do is walk her home and give her to Ric hand sit down and bawl. I was a nervous reck the rest of the week. The next day Rich put a lock on the top of the door that only he and I can reach.

You are not a bad mom by no means you had something else you were doing it happens.

Big hugs to you.

Thanks guys, I guess it can happen to anyone, but I can't help but to think of the what ifs...

By Tayjar on Thursday, March 30, 2006 - 10:38 pm:

I had this happen to me when my DS was 3, only he was on his bicycle and I was walking. He has a lot of hearing problems and at this point he had very little hearing because of blocked tubes. He took off peddling as fast as he could. I started sprinting and screaming his name. He was heading for a major intersection and I could hear a car coming fast. They were going to hit him. Some of DHs friends were working on a house and heard me screaming. One of them jumped from the top of a ladder and sprinted in front of the car and grabbed Jared. He then had to hold me and calm me down because I was crying so hard and shaking. Like you, I still think about what if...

So glad your little man is OK. It's amazing how quick these things can happen.

By Annie2 on Thursday, March 30, 2006 - 11:04 pm:

I can't speak for all the moms here but I can say for myself, I too, have had scary moments. That's part of being a parent and a human on this planet.

You can replay in your mind...one second more; maybe one second less, etc. Lesson learned on your part now. Playing in the drive near the road is an issue now. Maybe park the car at the end so he can't venture into the street?

As far as letting other family members watch him; well, maybe your niece wouldn't have had him outside that day, etc. Accidents happen even with the best of care present.

((((HUGS))) what a scary thing to go through!

By Jtsmom on Thursday, March 30, 2006 - 11:16 pm:

I have definately learned my lesson. No more driveway playing!! For either of the boys. I called every fence company in the phone book today. I am having that yard fenced in ASAP!!!

By Rayanne on Friday, March 31, 2006 - 09:27 am:

{{{{{HUGS}}}}} That was definately scary. I am so glad that he is ok hun.

By Bellajoe on Friday, March 31, 2006 - 01:32 pm:

That is so scary. As you can see, you are not the only mom this has happened to. And you are definitley not a bad mom because of it. Those little ones are pretty quick, and when you run after them they think it is a game.

THis is why we always played in the backyard when my kids were little.

(((HUGS!))) Thank goodness he is o.k.!
