I'm not sure if all states have this on their websites, but my state (PA) allows you to search for unclaimed money on their website. Every once in a while, usually when the news stations do a report on it, I search under my maiden and married names on the off chance that I may have money out there, waiting for me ot claim it. It's a long shot because I'm pretty good about getting what's due me! LOL

Anyway, my sister was searching online for a friend of hers and decided to search our maiden name. She discovered that there is unclaimed money in my mother's name. My mother has been deceased for 8 years (my father for 9 years). She called the phone number for more information and was told that she needs to fill out the claim and the money will be divided among my siblings. It's not much, but it is a nice little surprise!

I don't know where the money came from! I had thought that all moneys from my mother's estate were settled since it's been so long, but apparently this is from an insurance company. My first thought when my sister told me that was this was a payment my mother had made that was never credited to her estate, but I really don't know for sure.

All states have an unclaimed property department, I'm just not sure if all states allow you to search online. I would think they would, wouldn't you? Do a Google search for your state's treasury department.

I did this a year ago and had a pretty large lump sum from my old job when I worked for the airlines. It took only a few weeks to get the money. The money came right before Christmas this year, it was a very good Christmas!
