Scary Morning
I was going to go to the mall today to meet with a friend and let our kids play in the play area. Well, on the way there, Rylee all of a sudden had to go PeePee. I stopped by my mom's and let her go. They have 2 dogs, one Yorkie and one mix (she's half lab & half rot). After we left, Rylee started itching her arm, and then rubbing her eye. I stopped at publix to get some Children's Benadryl because it was getting worse and she was breaking out into hives. I gave her the medicine as soon as we got into the car. All of a sudden, her eye started to swell shut. I was fraking out, so I called my friend and told her that I couldn't make it. I called her doctors office to try and come in, but they couldn't see me until 1:15, it was 11:30 then. I couldn't wait that long, so I was driving and called Chris, and he told me to take her to the firestation where he used to work. They were on a call, so I kept driving. I had to pass my doctor's office, so I ran in there and asked if she could look at her for me. Well, $155.00 later, she is fine. The doctor said that he had a bad reaction to the dog that licked her, which is the mix. The more she goes around her the more liklieness she has to getting Anaphalactic Shock. Now, I have to call my parents and tell them that we cannot come over anymore, unless the dog is put up. I have never been so scared in my life. I am glad she is feeling better. As soon as we got home, I put her in the tub and gave her a bath.
Poor baby!! I am glad she's feeling better!
Wow thats scary!!!I'm glad shes ok Thank God you were with her when it happened
{{{HUGS}}} I have experienced anaphylaxis with my DS and *know* how scarey it is. I highly recommend taking Rylee to an Allergy/Asthma specialist for testing. She very well could be allergic to dogs, not just to that one particular one. Testing will help pinpoint the trigger and the doctor will prescribe an Epi-pen Jr. for you to have available at all times in case of another reaction. Both my kids are severely allergic to nuts and require an Epi-pen and Benadryl available at all times. DS is allergic to cats and we recently learned DD is allergic to dogs. Their pet allergies trigger asthma, which can be life threatening as well. More {{{HUGS}}}!
((((((Rayanne and Rylee))))) Trina is absolutely right, you need to get an epi-pen, and once she's older consider an emergency alert bracelet/wristband. I would want to have one, just in case she comes in close contact with a dog, or someone who has a bunch of dogs, better safe than sorry! Many more hugs, sweetie!
Good point, Crystal. I forgot to mention that both my kids wear Medic Alert sportbands. DS first started wearing one at 3. On the back of the emblem there is a toll free # and an ID number. All our medical and contact info is registered with MedicAlert.org. It gives me peace of mind, especially since my kids are older and I'm not always with them. MedicAlert.org
I would take her to an allergy specialist. It might not be the dog but something that the dog had on it, especially if it had just been outside. My DD used to get like this when she would touch tomato plants and my DS gets like this around poison ivy. If our dogs have just a trace on their fur, he will break out. A specialist can pin point what allergies she has for sure. Glad she's feeling better.
Oh my gosh how scary! How do you think your parents will react?
That is very scary!
Some good advice above. Glad she's OK.
Wow, that's scary. Ditto on the allergy specialist!
Definitely the allergy specialist. And, talk to the specialist. It may be that your parents will have to visit their grandchildren at your house, not theirs. It may be that the presence of dog hair, dog dander, etc., in your parents home could trigger an attack even if the dogs are locked away. If it were me, I would, very regretfully and apologetically, tell your parents that you can't bring Rylee to visit them until after she has been seen by an allergy specialist. I know if you tell them what happened, they will be very upset too, and they wouldn't want to risk her having another attack.
I have an appointment tomorrow with her ped. to get a referal for an allergy specialist. Thank you for all of the advice. I never would have thought about taking her to a specialist. You all are the best!!!!!
Glad she is doing better. Let us know how the drs appt go.
Her appointment is at 9:45 this morning. I will update later and let you know how things go.
Everything went well. The doctor gave me 4 pediatric specialists. My mom is going to try and get some info. on them on Monday and see who is the best. One of the perks of her being a nurse. I will call on Tuesday and make her an appointment. Hopefully, I won't have to wait too long.
geez Rayanne, you must have been freaking out! That sounds so scary. I'm glad she is doing better.
Connor has sort of the same reaction, but I think it's the dog food that bothers his skin. She licks him and he will break out after she ate her food. I wonder if it has eggs in it? Connor's allergic to eggs. Let me know how the specialist appt goes! Glad to hear she's ok! I would have FLIPPED OUT!!! Makes me wish I went to med school.
