Bleeding Ear???

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive February 2006: Bleeding Ear???
By Shellyg on Monday, February 20, 2006 - 07:16 pm:

I woke up in the middle of the night last night to find that my ear was bleeding, alot! I would say about two teaspoons. I have not hit my head, stuck a q-tip in my ear, and I am not sick. I am going to the Dr.'s tomorrow to get it checked.
What the heck would cause an earbleed? It really does not hurt either.

Wow that is strange, I've never heard of that. Sorry no help here. Let us know what the doc says tomorrow. Hugs.

One of my nieces had her eardrum rupture and that caused bleeding. She said it didn't hurt, but I don't know how that could be true. LOL

An infection could cause it.....definitely check it out!

Ditto Vicki. I've had several students who have had their eardrums rupture and it was pretty bloody. I don't think it hurts at all and you can't even feel it (although an "eardrum rupture" SOUNDS like it shouldbe painful!). Definitely see your doc for treatment...let us know what happens!

I would also suggest a perforated eardrum. If you had an infection and it ruptured, then you wouldn't feel pain---it would actually feel better. Let us know what the doc says.

Yikes. Thanks for all the info, you guys are good. My neighbor who is a nurse just came home and said I might have a ruptured ear drum. Sounds scary! What exactly is a ruptured ear drum? What is the outcome?

By Crystal915 on Monday, February 20, 2006 - 10:16 pm:

Oh, that sounds awful!!!! I don't know too many details, but my dad ruptured his scuba diving. He's a police officer, hears fine, recovered (this was probably 20 years ago), so hopefully it's not too serious as far as long term effects!! ((((((Shelly))))))

It's not too big of a deal. It just means you had a middle ear infection that got pretty bad, built up a lot of pressure and caused a hole in your eardrum. Sounds bad, but it's really not. I just can't believe that IF (and we don't know for sure) that's what happened that you didn't feel any pain in your ear. I've had a couple of ear infections as an adult and they are REALLY painful. Anyway, usually the eardrum will heal on its own, but you'll probably be given antibiotics to clear up the infection and keep bacteria out of the now-exposed middle ear. Usually the eardrum heals fine and there is no hearing loss or anything. Again, this is all speculation on the basis you do have a ruptured eardrum.
