Trina...nut allergy ettiquette
Okay so my son's bday is coming up and today I made cupcakes for the class. We have a new child in our class with a nut allergy. I don't think very severe, because we got a note home about a group snack, but they are allowed to bring in whatever they want for individual snack. (i had a good friend that couldn't even be in the same room with someone eating a pb sandwich). Anyway, I made the cupcakes from scratch, so I know they don't have peanut anything (icing too), I used liners for the pans, and they are pb safe as well. I know stones pose a risk, i used metal. For the question. I am sure they are safe. But if it were my child I would assume I wouldn't take the risk. Is it okay to offer this child a cupcake? This is for today, but it hadn't dawned on me in advance or I would have contacted the mom. Thanks
We always err on the safe side. My kids are taught not to eat anything unless they are absolutely, positively sure it's safe for them. Home baked goods are high risk and usually avoided unless I'm contacted and the ingredients are OKed ahead of time. Don't feel bad for not doing so. LOL! It's a fact of life for us and we're used to it. I provide the teachers with safe treats to keep on hand for my kids for situations just like this. BTW, a "nut allergy" may include tree nuts as well. Almonds, pecans, hazlenuts, cashews, etc.. Peanut and tree nut allergies are actually two separate allergies. Peanuts are legumes and not considered "nuts", however it's not unusual for people to be allergic to both. My DS is severely allergic to tree nuts but NOT peanuts. He can have peanut butter, etc.. DD is allergic to both.
