Concussion
I had to take ds to the dr. yesterday. He was playing football the day before with the kids in the neighborhood and got slammed, knocked out for a few seconds, and ended up with dizziness a huge headache. Now he can't do any kind of physical activity for at least a week, maybe more. Hopefully this makes him realize how serious this can be. Of course, we both got a long lecture about playing tackle football without safety equipment! They play football all of the time, but I thought they were playing touch football! (Just so you know, many 7th grade boys are shockingly lacking in common sense.) Well, with this kid, I'm kind of surprised it took him almost 13 years to get a concussion. He was the kid climbing the entertainment center at 18 months, lol. I'm just glad he's okay.
I'm glad he is ok. I'll spare you another equipment lecture, lol, Boys will be boys!
I'm glad he's okay, to (mostly! lol). I think I would have resented the lecture. Lecture my kid, but not me! Like parents of 13yo's know everything their kids are doing! lol Oh, and it's not totally a boy thing. I was more likely to end up in the ER getting stitches than both my brothers put together! Of course, it was usually their fault, but that's another post...
Most concussions heal with no problems. 3 of my 4 kids have had concussions. What are the odds of that happening? Jen got one at age 5, sitting on Jules' lap at the dinner table and fell over backwards, hit her head HARD on the floor. Jeff got one at age 6 the day my dad passed away, playing football with the neighbor kids, tripped over the ball and hit his head on the driveway. Jason's (at age 14) was the worst - he was (stupidly) riding on the back of a car and fell off. His was severe, he lost a lot of skin on his back, and had to be hospitalized for a week on IV steroids to reduce the swelling in his brain for the concussion. We were *really* worried that time. I too, would have resented the lecture. It's surprising how many kids actually DO get concussions. Usually they are just fine. However, that doesn't stop you from worrying about them. Glad to hear he's OK. Take care of him, Mom! {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}
Ouch! Tough lesson. My oldest seems to have to learn things the hard way herself and she's 9. My daughter has had two concussions. Unfortunately she inherited my klutzy(sp?)gene. lol! I'm glad he's okay.
back in 1975 (15), before bicycle helmets were cool, I was riding my bike, fell, and hit my head. I saw stars for a few seconds, but still got back on my bike and finished the ride to my friend's house. I called my dad and said I should probably go to the doctor. I had a concussion. At first the doctor said I would have to be woken up every few hours at night, etc, but then said my parents wouldn't have to do that. I recovered without incident. When Gary and I went out to buy a bike, the first spring (1988) after we were married, he insisted I buy a bike helmet. I have worn one since then. Although, I have never ever fallen and hit my head since then! LOL!
