Can anybody explain this(Airfare question)

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive February 2006: Can anybody explain this(Airfare question)
By Jackie on Wednesday, February 8, 2006 - 11:57 am:

So Ive been looking at airfare. The cheapest so far is 204$(USAIR) which is a fair price, not what I wanted. I thought I might as well get the airfare at that price. So I was online going to buy the tickets, and when I put in the amt I needed, it said they were now 247.50$. It was werid. When I looked up one, it came up as 204.50 and then I went to 2 tickets, and the same price, but once I started adding the kids, the price jumped to 247.50$
I dont get it. Is it the fact they only have a certain amt of seats in that price range?
I have never encountered that problem before. I do not like to book over the phone at times. Last yr I booked over the phone with Delta, and they charged me a $5 fee for each ticket, and if I would of done it online there would of not been a 5$ fee added.

I do a lot of booking business travel through Expedia and Travelocity, and I have seen that happen more than once. Here I am, happily floating along, going through all the steps, and suddenly, on the page where I am supposed to click to finalize the purchase, the price has suddenly gone up anywhere from $50 to $300. Doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

Jackie, very often when you check prices online, the prices change when you actually book them. Was the $204.50 including taxes and any other charges?

We frequently book through Orbitz. We check multiple carriers/cheapest flights/shortest flight times. But on more than one occasion when we've tried to actually book flights, the price has increased from the published flight on the Ortitz site.

Happens all the time. When you see what you want, you literally *have* to buy it right then because 15min. later it will be something else. Has happened to me multiple times, with Travelocity and Expedia.

JAckie I dont know where you need tickets from / to, but I like the 'worry free vacations' site. I was just looking at some flights for $79 on there.

I was on Jet Blue earlier and they had some really cheap flights this spring.

It was odd, I put in one person, it was 204.50(that was including tax), then I put in for 2 people, it came up 204.50, and 204.50
then I did it again, for 3 people and 4 people, and the price jumped to 247.50(each)
Then I went back to one person and it was 204.50 again, I did this all in a 3 minute time frame.
Being that I fly out of Norfolk, we dont have all the airlines here like some of the bigger cities do.

Its still so strange. I get an Orbitz update (just now)with the fair of 210$(they tack on the 5$ service fee)for the exact same flight. So I go to Orbitz site and act like Im buying all the tickets and they were charging me the 210$ for each ticket. When I went back to the USAIR site, the 204.50 came up for up to 2 people, but when I added more it came up as 247.50.. I dont get it?

When I was booking our tickets for the summer using points the same thing happened in terms of points. I think that your best bet would be to book it twice, 2 people at a time. They sometimes have limitations on the number of cheaper seats they sell. Maybe that is the problem. I don't know why it wouldn't show 2 seats at $204 and the others at $247 but it's worth a try.
