Got our new cooktop

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive February 2006: Got our new cooktop

Remember our ceramic cooktop broke? Well, almost two weeks (tomorrow) and $165 later, we have our new one. Someone came out last Friday but they had to order the part (whole new cooktop). They said it should be in Thursday (yesterday) and someone would come put it in today. It was delivered to our house Wednesday (I didn't even know what it was--had to look at the packing order) and they guy was here a little while ago. It took a whole of about 15 minutes. It was $55 for the service call and $110 for labor. FOR 15 MINUTES!!! The part was covered ($300 part) thankfully. We were told that labor was determined by parts--not by time. Whatever. So we have our new one. It only has to last us 3-4 more months. They've started framing our new house. :) We can't wait.

Cat, how did it break? This is why I didn't want one, I was concerned it might sratch or break, but lately I have been regretting it as they look so much nicer and cleaner.

Would you buy another one given the option?

Cori, I will butt in and give you my opinion on mine. lol We HATE ours. Harsh word, but whenever we are cooking one of us always says 'I hate this cooktop' lol!! There is one burner that we have always had problem with. Alot of people have them and like them tho! This is jmo after using one. :)

We want the Thermador Gas cooktop if we change this out. Or if we build another house, thats what we will put in.

That's strange what happened to yours Cat! I cannot believe how much it cost. :( Glad you got it all taken care of tho. Are you putting the same type in your new house?

Cori, our best guess (and a repairman's) is thermal shock. We were told this doesn't normally happen. The guy that was here today said most of what they replace is from people dropping things on them and they break (it is glass). Ours just popped. Dh put a pot of soup on for lunch and a couple minutes later I heard a very loud pop and it had cracked. I do like it otherwise. It's so much easier to clean than having to work around burners and imho it just looks a lot sleeker.

Conni, I'm sorry you don't like yours! I grew up with a gas stove and I don't like them. But both gas and electric have their pros and cons. Our new house will have another flat ceramic cooktop. Just not GE. :)

Cat, ouch...the cost of labor is just ridiculous sometimes. Glad you got it fixed though.

As far as flat cooktops, I have one and love it. It is so easy to clean and it seems to heat more evenly. I actually love gas better, but if I don't have a choice, I really prefer the flat top over regular electric. I don't know if it makes a differnce, but the person we bought our house from worked for Maytag and the oven/stove we have is the top of the line.
