If so, how is it going ? Does it work well ? TIA ! Sue

By Melanie on Monday, January 30, 2006 - 06:31 pm:

I love our chore chart!!

First, we have morning routines and evening routines that the kids follow daily. Their morning routine is:
1) Make bed
2) Bring dirty clothes to the laundry room
3) Brush teeth and wipe out sink
4) Make sure their *hot spots* are clear of clutter (those areas where things always tend to collect).
5) Complete their morning home blessing (instead of calling them chores, it's their way of blessing the house.)
Disclaimer, if you have ever visited Flylady.net, you will know where much of my terminology comes from! LOL

Their evening routine is
1) Dirty clothes to the laundry room
2) Brush teeth and wipe out sink
3) Check hot spots
4) Quick! Run around the house (Find items that are not put away and take care of them).
5) Pick up their room and closet.

Additionally, I have a chart listing their daily chores (home blessings). Each child is assigned one job to be completed in the morning and one in the afternoon. These range from dusting the living room, to putting away laundry, to vacuuming one room, to cleaning a bathroom.

I have found this method to be very effective. The kids know exactly what they have to do each day and it's different everyday. None of the jobs take very long (even the bathroom one is done fairly quickly) yet it makes a huge difference in our home. I rarely have to remind them to do their jobs.

Yes, we have one for morning and evening routines, along with daily chores. We made one for my youngest, it has pictures too since he isn't really reading. My oldest has a regular chart that I got somewhere. It really helps, especially with the morning/evening routines.

It is great! I can't handle repeating myself every day, and this has stopped that. My almost 8 yr. old is going through a forgetful phase(drives me totally insane) and this has stopped the problems we were having.

My sisters boys are 8 and 5 and she uses a chart similar to Melanie's. It works very well for her. Hers also includes things like:
making the bed, brushing teeth, feeding dog, feeding hamster, feeding fish, and backpack hung up.

I love the idea of chore charts because it teaches organization, gives a visual of achievements for the day, reminds, and teaches work ethic. I used them all the time in Kindergarten and I think kids thrive on them! Good luck!:)

We use a variation on a chore chart that has worked really well for our family. We've been doing it for two and a half years now and I really like it. It works well for our family and shifts the main responsibility from the parent (Why didn't you remind me???) to the child (I know what I'm supposed to do each day). We have a wake-up book and a bedtime book and they do each every day. It's completely changed the two most hectic times of the day for us.

Thanks for your input ! Great ideas too !
melanie, Do you post the job duties (or house blessings on a chart?)Then do they check them off when they are done or do you check them off?
I purchased a dry erase board.
Thanks again,Sue
I recenly started a part time job a way from home and I just can`t do it all anymore LOL !

Mel, do you mind listing your dailies for your kids. I have fallen off the flylady wagon and need to step back on.

The funny thing is we know for the kids having it written down works, but I am so bad about it too. I need to post my routines again and do them. Time to get the purple duster and dust off the notebook!

By Melanie on Wednesday, February 1, 2006 - 10:49 am:

I printed up the morning routine, put it in a plastic cover, and taped it to the bathroom in their bathroom so they see it as a reminder as they are starting their day. (It starts with Good Morning! And ends with Enjoy your day! So it feels positive). I did the same with the night time routine and posted it on their wall. For the house blessings I printed up a chart that says "Bless This House", put it in the plastic sheet and hung one on their closet door and one inside a kitchen cabinet for quick reference for me. They don't have to check anything off. I know if they completed their task or not usually (and if not, I just ask them).

Kaye, I am with you, it makes all the difference when it is written down! Otherwise I am quick to fall off.

Here are their tasks:

Just a quick question. Today I am cleaning and going crazy on organization, it is "manic" day. How are your kid in the mornings? Mine barely get out of bed and to school. So although I love the idea of them getting up and doing something for mom each day, I wonder about time.

Today was another bad start for the week, and I woke up in a mood to fix all their bad habits today! (yeah I know)

By Melanie on Wednesday, February 1, 2006 - 04:35 pm:

My kids are all early risers. Their morning routines are usually complete by 6:30. I would definitely modify it and not make your mornings any more crazy. Knowing they get up so early and could get a job out of the way before leaving for school was why I set it up the way I did. Our afternoons tend to be more crazy with after school activities.

LOL, I have had many days like that. :)

You ladies are good! Your houses must be so clean.
I mad charts last night (you all inspired me! :) )
All i had on their charts was:

DD (6) and DS (5)
Make bed
put clothes in hamper
pick up toys
set table for dinner (on certain nights)
Dust (on Saturdays)

i'm not sure what else to have them do because of their ages.
There is no way i would have them empty the dishwasher. I can pretty much count on one of them dropping a dish on their foot or something.

What else can a 5 yr old and 6 yr old do to help clean the house?

By Tink on Thursday, February 2, 2006 - 08:54 pm:

Your ds and dd should be able to fold most laundry, sweep or vacuum (not as well as you might like though!), windex, wipe off kitchen or bathroom counters, feather dust, take out the trash, and wipe off the table and chairs. Melanie, I think you've mentioned that each of your dks also has to come up with something to bless the house on their own? I really love that idea and keep meaning to implement it but haven't yet. I hope that it will teach them to see what needs to be done, instead of stepping over the dirty clothes on the floor or ignoring the smudges on the TV screen.

By Melanie on Thursday, February 2, 2006 - 10:41 pm:

I actually had to change that, Tink, since they were doing the same (easy) thing every night. LOL. So now their blessings are assigned. :)

By Melanie on Thursday, February 2, 2006 - 10:42 pm:

Oh, and Patti, I wish I could say my house was super clean! LOL. It's not as good as I'd like it to be, but better than before I implemented this system.
