Vacation ideas

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive January 2006: Vacation ideas
By Colette on Sunday, January 29, 2006 - 05:51 pm:

We are thinking of taking the kids - somewhere over april vacation but I need some ideas. Dh wanted to do Moab or Park City but I think we'd be better off renting a house through cyberrentals on a beach somewhere. So where is it warm enough to swim in April? I was thinking North Carolina but I don't know how warm it is down there then. We still have snowstorms in April up here.

I wouldn't try anything further north than South Carolina. And even Myrtle Beach, in SC has cool ocean temps in April.

But I agree! I'd take the beach anyday for a vacation of any kind!

If you want a warm beach in August come to Texas! Galveston has beachfront stuff, but the beach isn't great. But things are affordable and flights are cheap. If you want the best beach, north padre or corpus christi are good places to go.

I don't think the water off NC would be warm enough for swimming that early in the year. You've got a better shot at the water temps being warm enough for swimming further south - say in FL. Of course, watch the area you choose, since April is high season in some areas there.

Colette, Keep in mind these southerners aren't aware of the ocean water temps we're used to up here in New England during SUMMER months. LOL! smileywink

I copied and pasted these averages for Myrtle Beach, SC. Keep in mind that North Carolina temps may be slightly lower, as it is further north. And, I assume, the further south you go, the warmer the temps! Hope this helps you a little!

I put these all in columns, but it doesn't appear that it is going to show up that way. Anyhow, the first number is the air temp, second number is the water temp, and third number is the amount of precipitation.

Winter Air Water Precipitation
December 59 55 3.17"
January 57 51 3.80"
February 60 52 3.62"

Spring Air Water Precipitation
March 66 57 4.27"
April 75 62 2.82"
May 82 69 4.03"

Summer Air Water Precipitation
June 87 77 5.11"
July 90 81 6.09"
August 89 83 6.19"

Fall Air Water Precipitation
September 84 80 5.57"
October 76 73 2.73"
November 68 65 2.80"

I would steer clear of any "spring break" places like Padre or Myrtle Beach, especially in April...but that's JMHO. Too many wet t sh!rt contests. :)

Spring Break is long over in Texas by April. Our schools do their breaks mid march. I wouldn't expect the crowd to be too crazy. Also there are many family friendly beaches. I would stay away from south padre, but most of north padre is no alcohol allowed type beaches.

LOL Trina. A few years ago we visited Bea on our way to Florida. These girls of mine were swimming in the James River in VA in March. The local people had jackets on, I'm sure. LOL Any water that you can't walk on because of the ice is good swimming water - to kids!! :)

I'd avoid FL in April if you don't want crowds. Easter is the 16th this year, so we probably have some crowds still. Granted Spring Break will probably be busiest in March, but we will hopefully (we own a business the depends on tourist traffic) have some spill over from late breakers through Easter. Texas sounds good weather & swimming is your goal!
