Frustrated with GE
Some of you may remember when our microwave went kaput after it was only 2yo. Stupid thing almost caught the house on fire! That was about 1 1/2 years ago. Then our dishwasher quit working (only about 2 1/2 years old). Now our range, the last original appliance in the kitchen (we bought our own fridge--a Kenmore) broke Saturday. They were all GE appliances. Ya know, for having such a good name, I personally will never buy a GE appliance again (these came with the house). Dh put a little pot of soup on for the boys for lunch. About a minute later I heard a loud pop. I was putting dishes away so I thought maybe I dropped something or knocked something off a shelf. Nope. Thermal shock. The burner the pot was on had broken. Now there's a nice big crack that goes all the way from the edge of the cooktop by that burner, across the burner and to the bottom edge of the cooktop. For now it hasn't spread to any of the other burners, but they can't get anyone out here until Friday to fix it so I imagine it's going to be like a car windshield and keep cracking. The part itself is covered under warrenty (it's a $300-$400 part), but the service call and labor are not. So it's probably going to cost at least $100 for something that's not our fault. Yes, that's better than having to replace it ourselves, but still, it irks me. Thanx for listening to me vent. Oh, and we asked--our new house has all Whirlpool appliances.
We have Whirlpool and have only in the last yr had any issues. (we have had the appliances for 6 yrs now) My upper oven went out a couple of months ago. I have just been using the lower oven. But really needed 2 ovens during Christmas, so I am motivated to get someone out here to fix it. argh I think if you wrote a letter to GE and told someone about this. You *might* get your labor covered? It's worth a try! That is just ridiculous!!
We had GE when we moved in. Everything broke quickly. We replaced all of our appliances. We now have Whirlpool. We bought everything that was recommended by Consumer Reports. I hope you can get it fixed. I would call and complain--maybe they will waive the service fee.
The person I talked to said someone should be calling me with a more specific time. Maybe I should call back and try to talk to customer service. Or, as Ginny would recomend, put it in writing.
We had a GE dishwasher in our first house. The house was only a year old, when we moved in and we only lived there 4 years. Yes, we did have to have something fixed, in that 4-yr time span. I think the detergent cup broke. I don't think I would buy a GE appliance either. Right now, we have a KitchenAid dishwasher, an Amana fridge, a Frigidaire stove, an Amana washing machine and a Maytag dryer. We recently had to replace a small part on the dryer. Something is supposed to be D-shaped and it worn down to round. I do a lot of laundry, though, and the dryer is probably the oldest appliance in the fleet. (maybe about 10 years old.)
