Savings Bonds?
Could someone please let me know who's social security number is supposed to be on savings bonds? My husbands grandma gave my son one for Christmas and it doesn't have HIS number on it. So I don't even know if it will be valid. My sister has bought savings bonds before and she said she had to have the kids number on it. My husbands grandma is 87 so I have no idea? Maybe she doesn't know what she's doing anymore or maybe my sister's wrong. Does anyone know for sure? And what happens when Grandma dies and her estate is split up? Does that affect anything?
You have to have a SS#-- either the person it's for, or the co-owner/beneficiary. Sometimes, though, a person is buying one for a gift and doesn't know the SS#. In that case, they may put their own SS# on it. When the person comes in later to cash in the bond, they will have to provide their own SS# for tax purposes. Your son's bond is fine, and no, Grandma's death will not affect it.
Janet it correct, when you buy one as a gift, you can put your ss# on it. Nothing happens with taxes until it is cashed in. At that time, you will need his ss# and it will go under that. You are fine with it!!
Oh good! Thank you soooooo much.
