Ham/crock pot question

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive December 2005 : Ham/crock pot question
By Vicki on Thursday, December 22, 2005 - 12:35 pm:

I bought a spiral sliced ham that came with a honey glaze for it. Of course it is fully cooked. Is there any reason I can't heat this in the crock pot?? I have a sort of "open house" on Christmas Day and I am trying to make it as easy on myself as I can. I have planned my menu around things that I can make on Christmas Eve during the day and then just pop in the oven on Christmas Day to cook. So, I do need my oven on Christmas Day to cook a few of the side dishes. Do you know what temp high and low are on a crock pot? I don't want to cook it too long as I don't want it to dry out, but I also want it to be heated through. Any pointers on this? Or can you think of any reason I can't put it into the crock pot?? Thanks!!

Ham in Crockpot

I had almost the exact same question 3 months ago and it generated a lot of wiffly-waffly responses. Dontcha remember? :) You even posted!

I THINK this was talked about before...you can do a search on it...if I'm not losing my mind and this all happened, I remember most people said NOT to do it, that it would dry out. Or maybe they said no because the poster (I think PamT) wanted to cook it for nine or ten hours. So if you're only doing it for a few hours, maybe it will be fine. Altho I have no idea how long or what setting. Do the search...try ham and crock pot or try PamT as the author and see if any crock/ham posts pop up under her name. Good luck!

I buy a honeybaked ham every year and serve it at room temp. It's so very tasty and moist. If you want it warm then I would place slices in a dish with a bit of water, cover the dish and cook on low 325 for about 15 minutes.

LOL Pam, I forgot about that post of yours. Yes, I did respond, but I do now recall that I was concerned about the amount of time that you wanted to cook it. I would only put it in there for a hour or two just to warm up. That is the reason I wondered if anyone knew that temp of low and high on the crock pot. Well, even going back to your post and reading it, I guess we still don't know if this is ok to do or not. LOL

I do those spiral hams alot. I heat it for 1 hour and a half and then cover it up with tin foil and maybe a towel to keep the heat in. It stays warm for a long time. You can also heat it up in the microwave to serve hot. Easiest thing...

I buy the precooked ham all the time and place it in the crock pot. Mine don't usually come with a glaze. I just pour some maple syrup and a little tiny bit of water. I've left it in there for up to 6 hours with no problems.

I think it would be fine to use the crockpot to keep it heated. Just watch it, you'll be able to tell if it is drying out too much. I use my crockpot for everything!
