Bittersweet Thanksgiving
I got a call from my brother last Saturday night that my grandmother wasn't doing well. Sunday morning Noah and I took off for Mobile (DH and Adam were at a youth retreat). I was able to see my grandmother alert, but not able to speak. She has had Alzheimer's for several years and was also in congestive heart failure---94 yrs. old. I fed her pudding, gave her small sips of water, and kept lip balm on her lips. My mom, dad, sister, brother, SIL, and niece all went to eat lunch and Grandmother was doing a little worse. Her only living child (my dad) and her 3 grandchildren were all gathered around her bed when she peacefully died at about 3:30 pm on Sunday before Thanksgiving. My sister and I went shopping for a gown and robe for her to be buried in while my parents left for our hometown (only my sister lives there now) to make funeral arrangements. My DH did the funeral and graveside services and did a wonderful job since he has known my grandmother for the past 20 years. We all reminisced (sp?), laughed, and cried, and then celebrated Thanksgiving together. It was all very fitting, because if there was one thing my grandmother did right it was to prepare an awesome holiday meal and enjoy the family gathered all around. I was very close to my grandmother and will miss her greatly, but I know she is with the Lord now and with a new body and a sharp mind.
Pam, I am so sorry your family had to experience this loss but I agree she is in a much better place... Big hugs to you... You are in my thoughts...

(((hugs))) I'm sorry for your loss, Pam. I'm glad you got to spend a little time with her before she died, and that the service was meaningful. It also sounds as if your family spent Thanksgiving celebrating her life. What more could any of us ask for?
