I'm getting a cold! How will this work with the baby??

I'm just curious, but I feel like I am fighting off a cold! Now, I am really concerned how this will affect my c-section and if I am going to get the baby sick! I know he's going to get sick with all the preschool germs my DD gets home, but I didn't think as soon as he was born!

Does anyone have any experience with this? I've been drinking lots and lots of OJ and tea! I don't know what else I can do!

If you still have a cold when you bring the baby home, wear a mask and be even more scrupulous about hand-washing that usual. Not much else you can do. As for the C-section, that's up to the doc.

I am sure you will be fine! Do you plan on breast feeding? That will help the baby's immune system a lot, and I bet that you fight the cold off before then anyways. I am sure too that if you do get a cold, as long as you aren't running a fever, they will go ahead with the c section, but of course, I am not a doctor. By the way, I too had a scheduled c section with my second child, he was breech, and other than the gas pains afterward, recovery wasn't long at all, and I had no problems breast feeding even after my son had to spend his first 24 hours in special care and was fed with a bottle. Best wishes to you and take care!!

Eve, it could also be allergies if you have them. Despite the snow we just got in New England the weed pollen is extremely high. I doubt the c-section will be affected if you have a cold and if you do come down with one most likely you will be all better by the time you leave the hospital.

I was sick with a terrible cold, including severe coughing, when my DS was born. However, it was a vaginal delivery. I know nothing about c-sections. DS was born with a stuffy nose, but that could have been from fluids. The doctor was not concerned at all. We brought him home and he was fine.
The worst part was the coughing AFTER he was born. It pulled on the stitches everytime. Ouch!
I'm sure everything will be fine!

I had a cold when Dylan was born and they said not to worry since I was breast feeding him.

If you aren't going to nurse him then I would probably be careful around the baby.

I thought for sure you would have had that baby by now! :)

Dh had the down and out full fledged flu when dd was born and she was never sick at all from it. He was sicker than a dog for about 2 weeks and puny for probably 2 more. He never wore a mask. The day I deleivered he was feeling puny but just thought he was tired from being up all night. So he held her and changed her etc. They next couple of days he kept feeling worse but held up for me until I got her settled at home and under control. Then finally went to the dr to be told he had the flu. And that point the dr said if she was gonna get it, it was done done. But the dr said that since I was bf that that helps alot with immunities.
Best wishes for you and yours though.

Eve, you have to stop fretting. You need to relax and enjoy the last few days of this pregnancy. You have worked so hard to get here. :)

{{{Eve}}} How are you today? I had a cold when I had DS by c-section 11 years ago and it didn't affect it in anyway. The only thing was the next day they just kept me breathing in the little machine thing to check my air coming out, more then they usually would after a c-section. Just to make sure my lungs were ok.
Don't worry , just relax for these next few day:)

Don't worry! If you're breastfeeding, you're his immune system anyway and all those antibodies your body is producing to fight your cold will be transferred to the baby. He'll get the cold but he'll get the weapons he needs to fight it as well.

If you're not nursing, I can't imagine the cold will do him serious harm.

Thanks, everyone.

I was concerned more about getting the baby sick, since they say to keep them "protected" from sick people for the first weeks. I just couldn't imagine my whole house being sick and bringing a baby into that. I know my Dr. said that if I got the flu, they would have quarantined me from the baby! I've never heard of anyone being sick while delivering, so it got me a little worried. I didn't want to be away from the baby! So, I'm glad to hear it shouldn't be a big deal, especially with breastfeeding. Thanks.:)

I'm just drinking lots and lots of liquids and I'm doing ok. If I take some Sudafed and drink my tea, I feel better. It's just when the Sudafed wears off and I can't breathe and the post nasal drip is giving me a sore throat. I'm just going to take it easy for the rest of the weekend and I hope I get better. Thanks again.
