How's your turkey???

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive November 2005: How's your turkey???
By Cat on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 10:14 am:

Mine's still frozen solid! It's been in the refridgerator in the garage for the last week. So now I've got it sitting in water in my sink. :) Check your bird! A turkey dinner without a turkey would be kinda sad. :)

Btw, does a frozen turkey weigh more than a thawed one??? I know it shouldn't, but BOY it sure seemed like more than 23lbs lugging that thing in! lol

LOL, Cat! Only the four of us this year, so I just bought a 5 lb. turkey breast. I'm going to cook it in the crockpot. Although it's now defrosting in the frig, the recipe said I could cook it frozen.

Off to the store now to buy last minute Thanksgiving items... :)

I bought a turkey breast, too. It's getting softer, in the fridge. I can poke my finger into it! So, I think it will be okay tomorrow. There will only be 4 of us, too.

This one is a bit rebellious:

Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

ROFL!!! That was too funny, Heaventree! :)

We're having a friend over tomorrow (her dh is overseeas) and then having a family of four over Friday night for leftovers. They go to his parents for Thanksgiving and don't have leftovers. I told them we'd share! :)

I got my turkeys out of the freezer and put them into the fridge in the garage on Sunday morning and mine are still frozen too!! Like you, I started to panic, so they are in my sink in water too!!

By Kaye on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 11:45 am:

I thought the same thing last night. My is slowly thawing, I hope it will be fine by tomorrow. If it isn't good by tonight I will throw it in the sink. We live in houston, it will be 80 today, so I hate to leave meat out.

By Eve on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 11:51 am:

I haven't even checked, but probably still on the frozen side. I'm using my sink right now, so I can't put it in water at the moment. I'm thinking later tonight.

Just remember to use cool water in your sink and to change it every 30 mintues. Don't just leave the bird sitting on the counter.:)

I took mine out last Saturday and it's still frozen. Getting the sink ready now.

By Yjja123 on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 01:41 pm:

Mine is almost completely thawed. We are having a 4 pound cajun injected fried turkey breast. Simply thaw, heat for 30 minutes and done! Thanks to QVC. We tried one a few months ago and loved it.

I saw that and almost ordered it. LOL Is it the one that was the TSV? It did look really good, but I knew it would never feed the 19 people that we have coming tomorrow!!

By Sunny on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 02:04 pm:

My turkey has been in the fridge since last Friday. When I checked it a minute ago, the outside was thawed, but I'm sure I'll find ice crystals in the body cavity tomorrow. :)

By Annie2 on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 09:53 pm:

I put my frozen turkey in the fridge on Monday. It was still frozen this morning, so I have had it in the sink in cold water all day. It seems thawed to me now. I just put it back into the fridge for overnight. :)

Eve is absolutely right - if you are thawing your bird in cold water, change the water entirely every 30 minutes, and check the bird for thawing when you change the water.

Mine is good (I hope) ! LOL !
I have a 32# fresh turkey , never frozen. In my previous years of experience cooking them the cooking time is almost cut in half.
So ,I went to check it a few minutes ago and my oven was on fire inside from the over flow of juices !!The turkey just fit in my oven with no extra room.
We took it out of the oven and I turned it way up to 5oo degrees to burn the grease off
I suctioned out the excess juice
and refoiled the whole thing.
My house is full of smoke ! so we put fans in the windows , it`s 2 degrees outside.
Oh, and I took the temp. and it was only 80 degree`s !
Dinner is suppose to be at 2:00.
I don`t think my turkey will be done.
Maybe it will have a nice smokey flavor ?
LOL ! I`ll let you know.
Did yours thaw out in time Cat ???

Rofl, Sue!!! I hope your turkey turns out. :) Mine thawed by yesterday afternoon and I put it back in the fridge. I'll put it in the roaster in about an hour. We're not eating until 3 or so (half time of the Denver/Dallas game! lol). My mom said she saw you yesterday. I talked to her this morning. She had a peach pie in the oven that kept overflowing. Thankfully she had a cookie sheet under it. She's going to my brother's (next door!) for dinner, and the turkey's in their oven. Gosh, I thought our 23lb bird was big! I couldn't imagine a 32lber! It wouldn't fit in my roaster OR my oven! :)

My turkey breast just went into the oven! We will eat mid-afternoon.

Sue, how scary! I remember one Thanksgiving with a black turkey, though! LOL!
