My oven door just exploded!

How freaky! I had turned the oven on to warm up to cook something and just a few minutes ago the door completely shattered! It was still warm from where I cooked a ham this morning so I don't think it was from cold vs. hot air. So now I need to make a decision on whether to buy a new door (about $100) or just get a new stove. The appliances were here in the house when we bought it 6 years ago and they are from 1994. I think buy a new stove and be done with it. What a weird thing to happen, I was getting a dish out of the cabinet beside the stove so I got glass all over me. No cuts on me just a little shaken up by the sound. I am borrowing my neighbors stove for a dish that I am making for a potluck tonight. Whew!

Good thing you are okay. I too would just buy a new stove. I had the same thing happen to my fireplace. I was on the couch reading a book (it was one of those heavenly nap times) and turned on the fireplace (fully enclosed, flip a switch kin) and 15 minutes later it exploded. It scared the bejeebers outta me! The fireplace people said that the likely cause was a greasy handprint that made the heat focus on one area. So I wonder if something similar caused your mishap. Have fun stove shopping.

I would be inclined to just get a new stove! Sheesh!

By Annie2 on Sunday, November 20, 2005 - 06:52 pm:

Glad you are okay! I would get a new stove, too.

I would be stove shopping too. And I am so glad you are okay and no one else was hurt... Scary..

Thanks! I am still cleaning up glass pieces. I am going today to stove shop. I have to have something before my Thanksgiving meal on Thursday! I am hoping they will take the old one away with them when they deliver the new one. I would pay someone to get it out of my house :-)

By My2girlygirls on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 04:08 pm:

OK. I bought a stove. We will go pick it up tonight, I wanted to have it delivered but they couldn't do it until Wed. and that is cutting it too close for Thanksgiving. So, we will go pick it up tonight and my dad will install it tomorrow. Yippee! Of course now all of my other appliances look old.....

By Dawnk777 on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 11:53 pm:

Isn't that the truth? Over the past 3 years, we have replaced the stove, fridge and dishwasher, so while they are all different brands, they at least look all new now!

By My2girlygirls on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 - 07:22 am:

Well, let me add to the aggrevation of the whole process... I went last night and picked up the new stove, checked the receipt and the numbers matched. Well, I get it home and DH starts to unload it and the box had a tear in the bottom corner and it's white! I purchased a black stove. I called Sears and she said that the associate typed it in wrong and it was indeed the number for a white stove! So, she calls around and cannot find one single black stove in stock in the area!!! So, she said, "I can get it for you the day after Thanksgiving" well, I am cooking dinner so that doesn't work. She told me to install the white one and use it and then when a black one comes in to uninstall it and bring it back and exchange it for the black one. What a pain in the you know what. So, today I am going to Lowes and see if they have what I want and if they do, I will return this one to Sears and go buy one at Lowes!!! Fun Fun Fun!!!!!!!!!!!

UGH! Good luck! Does it have a ceramic cook top or is it a gas stove/oven?

We had to replace all of our appliances in the last 5 years, and as much as I'd love to have black, it wouldn't work in my kitchen, and ours are all white. I am envious! LOL

By My2girlygirls on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 - 08:16 am:

It's a Gas cooktop. We remodeled our kitchen in 2001 and chose to not replace the appliances which were white and we have realized that the black looks better with our cabinets, they are hickory. So, slowly we will replace them. Another day, another dollar!

By My2girlygirls on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 - 08:17 am:

Not a cooktop, it's a stove and oven...

By Karen~moderator on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 - 09:14 am:

So it's a gas stove - my house is all electric, when I bought it, gas lines had not yet been run in my subdivision. So when I replaced mine, I did away with the electric burners, and got a stove/oven with a ceramic cooktop. I love it!

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 - 11:59 am:

We didn't have a gas line to the stove area in our house, so when we replaced the stove a few years ago, we had to run a line, up to the kitchen! Now, we have both options, but currently are using gas.

Yesterday was an interesting day! I went to Lowe's, Home Depot, Circuit City, Best Buy and another place called East Coast Appliance... NONE of them had the stove I wanted in stock! They can get if for me by Tuesday. So, I am fixing Thanksgiving dinner at my neighbors' house, they will be out of town. I will have to lug it down the street but atleast I have somewhere to cook it. I told my DH that as aggrevating as this whole process has been, I know that it's not a tragedy, a tragedy would be to not have food to prepare or to not have the resources to go and buy a new stove. Puts things in perspective. (It doesn't make it any less frustrating though)

By Kaye on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 08:28 am:

oh man. What a pain. Glad you have the right viewpoint though. YOu many want to right that down somewhere you see it when you are carrying the 6 loads back and forth :)

By My2girlygirls on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 10:00 am:

Good point! After lugging the turkey, ham, stuffing, rolls, I may need a little reminder! :-)

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 10:26 am:

Yeah, the point is, you will still have a Thanksgiving dinner, even if it was a pain to lug it back and forth! Bummer that you couldn't find the stove you wanted, in time!
