Nutrisystem - Any Experience?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive November 2005: Nutrisystem - Any Experience?
By Amecmom on Wednesday, November 16, 2005 - 06:19 pm:

Anybody have any experience with Nutrisystem? My husband and I are thinking of doing it for two months to try and lose a few pounds and not have to think about what we're eating.
I have been cooking lately, which is good, but I really think we need something that's already a done deal.
Have you tried it, or know anyone who has?

I just joined weight watchers and have to say I think it is wonderful. They have meals you can buy too, but they discourage doing all meals because the sodium level in prepackaged food tends to be high and you don't learn how to eat in real life.

I used to work there. Stay away!! Something like weight watchers is much better for you.

I did WW and loved it, but I can't take counting points or portions anymore! I need something that's done for me already.
I really like the idea of not having to concentrate on food for two months. Is the food high in sodium? Colette, why is it so bad? Would you feel more comfortable emailing me? Momme at optonline dot net as you know, no spaces and use a @ and a .
I already eat relatively healthy, but I need to lose 10 to 15 pounds so that I can be back to where I was. Once I'm down then I'll be able to maintain it by proper eating and exercise.

I did it 15 years ago, lost 38 lbs and kept most of it off until I had dd almost 5 years ago. Now I snack too much,go to McD's, and eat her leftovers. Got to stop that. The program has changed a bit. I say go talk to them, go to a WW. Check them both out and see what you think. I did learn to change my eating habits with Nutrisystem. The packaged items were what I needed to show me the size I really needed. And some of the food was pretty tasty. (Some of it was garbage and gone thrown away. I had a good weekly counselor after the first 2 weeks. (The first one I had was a nut case and would yell at me for eating a cookie). The 2nd one said to eat a cookie if I wanted it. The worst thing you can do is to starve your craving until you get so nuts wanting something that when you finally get it, you binge on it.

I was a receptionist at the Nutrisystem I worked at. The people who ran the place would be sympathetic to clients and then make fun of their size when they walked out the door. The food was prepackaged crap and yes, you'd lose weight, but you'll lose weight if you just start paying attention to what and how much you really eat. How about talking to a nutritionist about lifestyle changes.

I know Vicki did it for a month and lost weight. Hopefully, she will see this and post.

I have a neighbor that did it a few months ago. She said that most of the food was terrible. She ended up throwing half of it away.

WW is great and you can join online. They have great recipes that are easy to make.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Yes, I did do it for a month. It was very easy to follow and I did loose weight while on it. I have been able to keep it off and actually loose a few more since I stopped the program. I didn't go to a actual weight loss place though. I ordered the food through QVC and they sent the program and I followed it at home. The reason I didn't continue it... QVC sent a packaged meal program. I didn't get to pick the food. Some of it wasn't bad and a few things were actually good, but there was allot that wasn't so good and many things that were just not even eatable! So it wasn't such a great value. I did check online and I could order directly through them and pick my food, but it was MUCH more expensive. Honestly, what I have done since then most of the time is eat a sensible breakfast and then a lein cuisine or something similar for lunch and then a regular dinner and just watched my portions. Having much of the same success doing that. It does work, but it just wasn't worth the cost of it when you can basically eat right and smaller portions and exercise on your own with the same results.

Ame have you looked into Seattle Sutton for prepared food? My boss was on a 1200 calorie diet and had the prepared food delivered to his house. When he didn't like something for lunch he brought it in for me and it was actually very good and looked appetizing. If I could afford it I would try this compant. They have a website www.seattlesutton.com if you want to take a look.

Thanks everyone. I am concerned about nutrition, but I also know I need something highly regimented that I don't have to think about or plan for. I am not really overweight. I'm 5'2" and weigh 125lbs. I also have a heavy frame (big bones). I just need something to push me over my sticking point. I am hoping something like nutrisystem will get off that last ten stubborn pounds.
Mary, I looked at their website, thanks. I will have to call to find out pricing info.
I would just order the Nutrisystem meals online and not go to counseling or anything.
I honestly do know how to eat healthfully. The problem is making the committment to do it for more than two weeks without falling into the sugarbowl - or in my case, the "anything fried" trap.
So, the food really tastes awful? I suppose I could choose my meals and make it more palatable - but then again, it's only for two months - then I'll find it easier to maintain.
Thanks again!

Ame, Consumer Reports rated Slimfast second to WW as the best weight loss program. I did it briefly this summer, but had to quit since we were doing so much traveling and it wasn't feasible. The program has changed a lot since the "drink a shake for breakfast and another for lunch" days. There have lots of varieties of breakfast and lunch bars that are really good, plus several kinds of shakes. They also now encourage you to eat half a sandwich or a small salad, some fruit, AND do the shake or bar thing. That was very manageable for me. I usually did sandwich, fruit, and then the bar was a dessert for me. They also have snacks and a list of things you can eat for snacks, like 20 grapes, 40 pretzel sticks, etc. Then you do eat a regular well-balanced meal for supper. I had lots of flexibility and options, it wasn't expensive, and it was pretty nutritionally sound. You can check it out at slimfast.com

Thanks, Pam.
I have protien bars and shakes and meal replacement stuff. It's not working because I don't have the discipline. I need something I'm paying for that I need to eat exclusively for a few months.
