Would you save your H.S. year books if......

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive November 2005: Would you save your H.S. year books if......
By Dana on Sunday, November 13, 2005 - 03:41 pm:

I just found my 3 yrs of h.s. year books. I have not looked at them since I was in high school. I am 43 yrs old now. I can't say I enjoyed high school.

I have no reason to save them for myself, but I wonder if my kids would be interested at some point. I was not really active in hs. Just band and a girls club that I could care less about it. I have only a few pictures in any of the albums and all but my class photo are pretty small.

So would you take the time and space to save 3 hevvy books that you have not looked at in over 20 yrs?

By Missbookworm on Sunday, November 13, 2005 - 03:50 pm:

I would and do but I'm crazy ;) lol

I still have my highschool yearbooks and I've been out for 15 years but rarely look at them. I kept mine because a bunch of people signed them. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have.

I wasn't really involved in highschool but still have a few good memories!

I'm 50 and I save mine......

Please keep your high school yearbooks especially if you have children.

When my mom was dying, she made me promise I would clean the house (meaning her and dad's house). I tried twice, but it was too much for dad. I should have done it while he was at work. The purpose was to go through 'personal things.'

Biggest regret of my life and fast forward.

Dad met and married a very nasty lady.

She moved in with him and cleaned out all of mom's stuff. Dad is very different around her, she wears the pants in the family if you know what I mean.

I did not realize what she was doing until my nephew stopped to see dad. My dad was a carpenter and had a 'dump' trailer. My nephew said piles of mimi's (my mom's) stuff was in this trailer.

I went into the house once and only recognized the furniture.

Dad never stepped up and offered mom's personal belongings. I had requested a box that was mine up in the attic. That was 2 years ago.

What is lost is mom's high school photographs, high school yearbooks, sentimental items, etc.

I regret waiting. I'm thankful, while she was here I went down and got handfuls of photo albums, but that's all I have.

DH graduated in 1977. I graduated in 1978. I would never give up my yearbooks! I do look at mine occasionally. It is a record of those years. In fact, after we had our basement flood, I was on mission to find what box they were in. Fortunately, they were up high and never got wet. They continue to be "up high!" Would be something to bring out with grandkids for humorous reasons!

Nah.

I have EVERYTHING from high school and before! I'm weird that way though. Don't care if I never look at them, I'm still going to keep them packed away in the attic. That's just how I am! BUT...I also had a wonderful high school experience.

By Sunny on Sunday, November 13, 2005 - 08:45 pm:

I have my old yearbooks. I look at them as a small piece of history. :)

If you do get rid of them, are you planing on throwing them away or seeing if your old high school or school district wants them? I know the district we live in now has a wall of "history" with an old football, letterman's sweater, photographs, etc. It's interesting to see a glimpse into the past.

By Melanie on Sunday, November 13, 2005 - 09:04 pm:

If you are looking at them as nothing but clutter, purge them! If they are of no value to you, I doubt they will be of much value to your kids or anyone else. I do like Sunny's idea of offering them to your old school, though. :)

By Mrsheidi on Sunday, November 13, 2005 - 10:03 pm:

I bet your kids would at least find them interesting! :) I will always save mine!

By Dana on Sunday, November 13, 2005 - 11:50 pm:

I went looking thru them. I don't even remember more than half of the names of those who signed the book. And I only had a few sign the book to begin with.

I have the actual photos of me that appear in the books, so I decided to toss them. I have so much more of my life tucked away in another box that I think I can easily toss them and feel fine.

I'm sure if I had fond memories of h.s. I would feel different. College is where I had all my fun. I have all my memories from there :)

Karen, can you say that having them around has made a difference for you?

I know I enjoyed looking at my dads year book, but that was because he did all the cartoon work throughout and was voted most friendly and a couple other fun things to see. I wasn't anything in highschool except just another kid in class.

I have my mom's yearbooks and photos from high school and college. NO WAY will I get rid of those, once in a while when I'm feeling a little nostalgic, I look through them. I'm keeping all of my old photo albums and yearbooks for my kids.

By Rayanne on Monday, November 14, 2005 - 02:40 pm:

I have mine and all of mine from grade school. i wouldn't even think of getting rid of them. I have a total of 13. K-12th.

By Janet on Monday, November 14, 2005 - 04:43 pm:

I got rid of mine after I graduated college. I hated h.s. and didn't want to be reminded of it. That was 21 years ago, and I have lived to regret it! Last year, I actually contacted my old h.s. to see if they had any extras from the years I went there, and they did. So I paid $40 to replace the "lost" books, but they weren't really mine. My daughters loved looking through the books, and I have even enjoyed the piece of history that they represented. All this to say, think carefully before throwing them out!

By Karen~moderator on Monday, November 14, 2005 - 07:34 pm:

As far as making a difference, no it hasn't, really. And like some of you, my high school years were NOT the best years of my life. But I will not throw them away. Even the kids like to look at them sometimes, even if only to poke fun at the styles. However, now the hair and clothing styles are the same as when I was in high school.

As for keeping my moms, I do it for sentimental reasons, and have no plans to throw them away.

By Pamt on Monday, November 14, 2005 - 10:06 pm:

I looked through mine just a few weeks ago. I had an awesome time in HS though and still keep in touch with about 15 friends from that time. I love reading what people wrote in my yearbook especially. DH and I went to the same HS and were in the same graduating class, so we have double of all yearbooks and won't be getting rid of any. The kids in our youth ministry love to look at them too and die laughing at the styles and the clubs/activities we were into at the time.

By Reds9298 on Monday, November 14, 2005 - 10:17 pm:

Pamt-We have double yearbooks, too, and still won't get rid of any! :)

By Kaye on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 - 07:40 pm:

If they don't make me happy, NOPE! I would maybe copy a page or two, if there was something special.

As a favor to your kids, don't hold on to too many things. One day you will die and they will inherit all your stuff and they will feel so guilty for getting rid of something that you held onto for years and years. Yes I loved seeing my mom's yearbooks, but can't bring myself to part with them. I would have never missed not having them though.

By Kateg on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 - 11:33 pm:

I have saved all of mine from grade school on up to high school. They are a part of my history & no, I don't look at them much, but they are there. My kids are just getting old enough now to look at them and enjoy poking fun at mom. :)

But, I'm sentimental.

I also graduated in a class of 906 seniors so that alone is a gawk moment in itself when looking at my senior annual :)

By Kaye on Wednesday, November 16, 2005 - 07:29 am:

LOL kate, I graduated with 16, my year book is easy to store :) Just last night i spoke with another classmate, he commented let's get together to do dinner and I commented back " I think that makes it our 15th class reunion" If we count out the people in jail then we are at 25% attendance :)
