Mosquitoes in house--HELP!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive October 2005: Mosquitoes in house--HELP!
By Pamt on Friday, October 21, 2005 - 08:51 am:

DH has been in Philly since Saturday and will be home tomorrow. While I miss him dearly, the *one* thing I was looking forward to this week was a good night's sleep each night since he is a terrible snorer. :) Well, something has happened each night like the dog whining, me having a bout of insomnia, etc. For two of the past six nights my 11 y/o had come into my room crying at either 5 am or 2 am because he says there are mosquitoes in his room and the buzzing and biting are driving him insane. Mosquitoes don't like me and I can spend hours near a mosquito infested swamp and not get a bite. DS, on the other hand, is a mosquito magnet and has scars all over his legs from bites. Since it is starting to cool down ever so slightly I thought he was imagining things, but he does have some new bites. Also, he crawled into bed with me at 2:00 this morning and then I heard the drone of mosquitoes by my ears.

I need sleep!!!! What can I do to get rid of these few mosquitoes in my house. This is also my DS with asthma, so I can't really go around spraying his room or anything. Since mosquitoes love water is there anything I could put in a bowl of water to bait them and kill them? DS and I are both going crazy. One more night until DH returns and I need sleep before the snoring resumes. :)

I really don't know if this works or not, I have never tried it, however it circulated in emails a few years ago.

I believe you are supposed to take a white dinner plate and fill it with lemon Dawn dish detergent, apparently this attracks and kills misquitoes. I doubt it works, but you could give it a try.

Do you have screens on your windows?

Move up north! It's too cold for mosquitos here this time of year. LOL!

The first thing I would do is check to make sure all windows, doors, etc. are closed tightly. They must be getting in somewhere.

One summer, it seemed like I couldn't get rid of the mosquitos. I would kill as many of them as I could, but every night there were more and they loved coming after me! Apparently one of the kids was opening the screen in the bathroom and leaving it open and the mosquitos were making a beeline for my house. LOL

I would suggest getting rid of any standing water inside or outside the house, making sure all the screens are closed and going on a mosquito hunt!

How does your DH like Philadelphia? The weather is rainy and overcast today, but we had some gorgeous weather this past week. :)

Pam we have the same issue here. With the humidity and the hurricanes the mosquito population is 10times the norm. Honestly what I would consider doing if it were keeping me up at night, at academy you can buy mosquito netting for about 10 dollars. You could hang from the ceiling and have the boy sleep under it :) This is what we do camping. Good luck!

We never open windows at all because with DS's allergies it is too big of a trigger, so no open windows. I did tell him to get rid of the water glass he keeps on his bedside table. I'll try the Dawn in water---I'm desparate. We have actually had somewhat of a drought since the hurricanes so there is no standing water outside. I've thought of the mosquito netting too--guess I'll get some of that as well. Grrr.

Sunny, I talked to hubby last night and he told me I'd be very jealous of the weather he's enjoying. I HATE the weather in the south anyway. He hasn't seen much of the city. He's actually living in a commune of sorts for the week--LOL--and is sleeping on a piece of plywood with an egg crate on top of it. I know he'll be glad to get home. He did get a cheesesteak yesterday though. :)

We are having this problem too. I never sleep with my cats, but lately I have because they will hunt down those buzzing pests and pounce on them and kill them. So far they haven't pounced on my face while I was sleeping.

Oh yuck, Pam! That would drive me nuts. I'm glad it's too cold for mosquitos up here now!

When we had our flood in 1998, after nearly 11 inches of rain in 24 hours, we had a bumper crop of mosquitos shortly after that! Ugh!

By Amecmom on Saturday, October 22, 2005 - 09:17 am:

Durng the day, put a bug bomb in his room. have him sleep on the couch or where ever during that night. Then vac, dust, see if you can find the source of the problem. Air out the room and you should be okay.

Also, there must be some kind of mosquito repellants that are approved for people with allergies or asthma ....

Don't know what to say Pam. I have the same problem, and I don't use sprays, etc. inside due to my own asthma. I cannot STAND to hear those things buzzing around my head! I end up stalking and killing every one of them! Where we live, all it takes is opening the door for 2 seconds for one to fly in and bring all his friends with him!
