Algebra help, vent and pity party

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive October 2005: Algebra help, vent and pity party
By Missmudd on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 - 08:06 pm:

I am dreading going to my diy algebra class tonight. I have a bunch of questions on the chapter I have been trying to study. I am literally in tears. I am not stupid but I have no idea how the heck I am supposed to do them. I know that the instructor is going to blow me off. He is one of those crappy math teachers who assume since he can look at it and do it everyone who cant must be retarded.

Does anybody know of a math board like this one? A freebie that is supportive on math?

I would love to get into a study group but I live so far from school it is just me myself and I unless I make another trip into town which is too long of a day for me. So hopefully I can find an online group to help.

TIA

Ugh, can't help you with anything but sympathy!

I had a highschool Algebra teacher who was just like that. We would come in, go up to the board and do our Algebra problems five at a time, humiliate ourselves till we finally got it right with no help or till the bell rang, whichever came first, sit down, get our assignment with NO instruction and be told to work on our assignment till the dismissal bell rang. NO JOKE.

It was horrible. But he was an excellent boys basketball coach so nothing was said or done.

I fully understand and anything you need to rant or rave, I'm ready to listen and rant right along with you about this horrible Health teacher I have right now!!!

Algebra Help

By Missmudd on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 01:14 am:

I just got back. On that test I was complaining about last wed I got a 65%. I was so depressed. Apparently I wasnt the only one who hopped up and down (see last post I am so mad). I got the best grade out of the class at 65% and if that isnt sad I dont know what is. He allowed me to fix all the questions I got wrong and gave me an amended grade of 88% which makes it much better than a D.

Found another lady at the class who is working on the same sections, so hopefully with the online help and a study buddy during the class time hopefully it will all work out.

By Luvn29 on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 08:18 am:

Ugh. At least you see it's not only you! I was upset because I got an 82% on one of my stupid required health tests. I'm getting 98's on my History and American Lit essay tests. Then I looked at the class average on that test, and it was 52%!!!! What the?????? Why do some teachers just try to make you get a low grade???? I mean, this is basic health!!! Come on!!!

Doesn't it feel good that you took the initiative to look up and figure out how to do those problems you knew you missed so that this time in class you were able to correct them and take that grade up to almost an A??? Great job! You'll get through this. A lot of people won't. But you will because you have what it takes to learn what you need to without the help of the snotty professor!

We're all here cheering you on! And when I'm struggling with my Chemistry and Pre-Cal next semester, I'll be the one needing the cheering on!

By Missmudd on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 08:07 pm:

Hey luvn I went through chem 110 online, so I might be able to help if you have a problem. Pre-cal you are on your own lol. What is your major?

By Luvn29 on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 08:24 pm:

Sounds good about the Chem. I'll be taking it online, too. I just hate math, though, so I am so dreading the pre-cal.

I'm an elementary ed major. Yeah, I will definitely need that calculus for my first and second graders! LOL! Of course, at the rate they are going, my class will be learning calculus by the time I have one. My fourth grader is learning the very basic algebra right now! Can you believe that? Variables and all!!!

By Conni on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 08:48 pm:

You have to have cal for an elem ed degree??? What?!! lol

By Missmudd on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 08:55 pm:

Wow! that is all I can say. Yikes.

By Imamommyx4 on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 09:09 pm:

If you ever need help with a specific problem, post it on here. I'm pretty good at Algebra and dh is a whiz (elec engineer). And I'm sure there are other ladies that might could help.

Good luck

I took pre-calculus in high school and never took calculus! I didn't need it when I was in nursing school.

My 16yo took algebra in 8th grade, so Geometry as a freshman and Advanced Algebra last year, pre-calc this year and Calculus next year. My other kid is taking Algebra right now!

By Enchens on Friday, October 14, 2005 - 05:10 pm:

Believe it or not, but kindergarten math now has some algebra. It's ever so basic, but it's there. And students have been doing it for years, it's just never been labeled as such until now. ex: 3 + ___=1 for youngsters
3 + y =10 for older youngsters
