Thank you all sooooo much for your prayers.We just got home.All of the heart related test turned out good.His blood pressure was 190 over 108 when we got to the hospital.On the way to Shoney's to eat dinner,he had a very serious bout of indigestion.He was almost doubling over with it.He actually had to sit for about 30 mins. before he started eating.Then,he ate quite a bit of FRIED porkchops,FRIED chicken,etc. from the all you can eat bar.(the whole time I was telling him how he SHOULDN'T be eating this!!)He had already broke out into a cold,clammy sweat before he started eating.And,then it got worse .I kept telling him that he needed to go to the hosp,but he said no because we do not have insurance.Then,when we got home,he said his head felt like it was about to explode from the inside out,and his jaws were hurting.So,I said"That's it ,we're going to the hospital!" As I was getting things ready to go back into town,he layed down on the deck,and I couldn't get him to respond to me!!!That was the most AWEFULL (sp !) feeling of helplesness in the world!!!I was sure he was dead!!They ran test last night and today.The DR. said that since all the heart test came back good,he thinks the attack was brought on from the food he ate,as well as his high trigliserides(500 +)and high chloresterol(240).They called this problem by a name that sounds something like Vaservagel (which is not how you say it).Anyway,there is a nerve,or a digestive function,that starts in your throat and goes to your rectum.And when this gets agravated,it mimmicks the exact same symptoms as a heart attack.So,in a way,that is reassuring.But I wonder why he was feeling so sick,and having the cold-sweats before he ate dinner?We are both so tired and worn out .And ,I don't even want to THINK about how expensive this is going to be!!!But,it will be worth every penny,just to have my soul-mate back home with me tonight!!!! Thanks for letting me rattle on.Before they took him to do today's testing,I kissed him and told him not to worry because I had MANY people praying for him(because I knew I could count on all of yall)THANKS AGAIN!!!!
Sounded like a heart attack. So scary. I am so very happy for you guys that it wasn't anything more serious. So what's the plan? Diet to get trig and chol down? Meds? Any more tests?
You mean vasovagal. Here is the description from the Mayo Clinic website: Vasovagal Syncope (fainting) This can also happen, if you strain to hard to have a bowel movement. Sounds like he needs to stay away from those fried foods.
I'm sorry you had to go through that! Glad he is ok!
I am so glad he is okay. Take care of yourselves, get some rest & follow the dr's treatment. {{{Hugs}}}
The good news is that it wasn't a heart attack. But I have to ask, is he on any meds to control his high cholesterol and triglycerides?? I know you didn't ask, but IMO, he should change his diet, that can only help, all those fried foods are not good for anyone's health. The feeling that his head was going to blow off was probably from the increase in blood pressure - I felt that when I had a really bad panic attack once and my blood pressure rose suddenly. I thought I was having a stroke. Anyway, I don't want to sound like I'm preaching, it's just that I have BTDT with my DH when he had a heart attack 5 years ago. I KNOW how frightened and helpless you must have felt. And ANY time anyone is presenting with those symptoms, you cannot ignore it. I hope you can convince him to make some changes that will positively affect his overall health!!!! Glad to hear he's doing better!
Sorry I haven't been on here for a couple of days.We've been resting alot .To answer yall's questions,yes he has been put on meds.Actually,he was put on meds for the tri. and chlost.and even at one point,for bp.But,he took it for a while,and then quit.And his eating habits are Horrible,to say the least!!But,this has really gotten his attention.He took his meds himself this morning before he left,and usually I have to remind him.Now,I'm going to look up info on the net about the foods that he needs.So if anyone has any tips,please tell me.And,again,THANKS for all your concern.
Wandilu, I hope I don't come across as preaching, but if he was put on meds for those things, HE NEEDS TO STAY ON THEM until his doctor takes him off of them!!! I can't stress this enough. I know that changing your diet/eating habits are not easy, but sometimes it's necessary. My DH is a *meat and potatoes* kind of guy - before his heart attack he was one of those *Wendy's double stack and fries* lunch types. Before he actually had his heart attack, he had several episodes of chest pain/nausea that were a warning that he chose to ignore. He did not even tell me about them. Luckily, he was not alone when he did finally have a heart attack. He was 47 at the time. It's been 5 years now. He has stayed on his meds and vitamins, he has changed his diet drastically, and his cholesterol numbers are better than mine now! Please, try to encourage your DH to take his meds and adjust his diet. Basically you want to eat lean meat - chicken without skin, low-fat beef though not more than once a week, fish (not fried), pork tenderloin on the grill is a GREAT low-fat meat - the cardiologist suggested that. Fresh vegies and fruit, cut back on dairy or at the very least eat low fat cheeses/sour creams, etc. Cookies, chips, crackers, etc. are often high in fat - start reading labels. Ice cream is loaded in fat as well as sugar, eat frozen yogurt or sherbet instead. Brown pasta, rice, breads, etc. are better for you than white ones, though to be perfectly honest, we still eat white pasta. You can't change everything about your diet overnight. Pick one area and work on it, we found that the best way to change DH's diet was to change something every week or two, so you gradually get used to eating differently. If it's done gradually, it just becomes a new way of eating, and you are more likely to stick to it. Reward yourself! It's not the end of the world if you do that every so often - or even once a week. It's the basic, overall changes that will help him (and you!). Good luck!
Karen,thanks for the tips.Especially about the tender loin,he loves that.How often can you eat this?And I really like the idea of rewarding him/us.I'm really learning how to "let" myself do good things for my self,and I think this would be great for him,too.He would love a "guilt-free" shopping trip to the sporting goods section at Wal-mart !!!!!!
You're welcome! And I forgot to mention: Turkey! You can also get turkey beef, if you can stand it, we hate it, so we use very lean ground beef when we do eat it. Oatmeal is a food that is helpful in lowering bad cholesterol - so start making breakfasts with oatmeal! Just get in the habit of reading labels - you want foods that are LOW in saturated fats. But be careful, because many people think that if they eat a low fat snack, they can eat 2 or 3 or 4 times as many, and they eat enough to equal a regular snack, plus they are getting a huge amount of sugar. Low fat stuff often has more sugar, I guess to make up for lost flavor...... A few links: Foodnetwork.com USDA.gov.LowfatFoods Healthtouch This one tells you what to avoid and what to eat! And these show low fat recipes: Low Fat Recipes Low Fat Southern Recipes JennyCraig.com
Thank You,Thank you ,Thank you !!!!!!
You're welcome! Now, just start implementing changes! You will be surprised how much better you guys will feel when you start eating a more healthy diet!
