One last "snow clothes" question (I think!)
We have now definitely decided to go to Colorado for Christmas. Obviously we have sweaters and jeans and then I'll buy snow pants and jackets off of Ebay. I have read that we'll also need a layer of long underwear and it shouldn't be cotton. I know I can buy it from Land's End or LL Bean, but I don't want to pay that much for something we'll use once and then it will be outgrown. So, all of you Yanks, where can I order inexpensive synthetic long johns online?
I would just go to Penney's or Sears. I live in the freezing part of the country and we don't go outside in long johns. Are you sure you need them?
I never wear long johns in the winter, even when I am on the snowmobiles, if you have snowpants you should be fine. But then again I guess I am use to the cold living in the Northeast My DS wears then when he is outside sledding, I always get his at Walmart or Target.
My kids just wore their long sleeved, long legged jammies underneath if they needed another layer. I wore my workout (spandex pants) on occasion.
When we first moved up here 2 yrs. ago, I bought long johns. My dks never wore them. Since we moved from Texas, we weren't used to the cold either. I don't buy them anymore. If you have snow pants, you should be fine. My dks usually wear sweat pants and then their snow pants on top. If you are just sitting out in the cold, yes, it does get cold. But, if you are out sledding, skiiing, playing in the snow, etc., you are moving around and you will stay warm. I personally, wouldn't waste my money on long johns.
Ditto here. I don't think long johns are needed at all. If your kids have any blanket sleepers left that fit them, they are great to wear under snow suits!! I buy a paid every year for dd for just that reason. The footed ones even help keep show away from their feet if it gets down in the boots!!
Okay thanks--no long johns then. We'll just go with sweatpants. Blanket sleepers in LA?? An 11 y/o boy in footed pj's?? A definite no on all counts--LOL.
LOL...didn't even think of that. It really does help keep snow out of the boots though. LOL
Yeah, my kids have always just worn snowpants, over their clothes to play outside. I have some long johns to wear when I'm outside for recess at school, but it has to be pretty cold for me to wear them. When I was in college and had to walk long distances to class, I wore long johns, then. I really haven't worn them much since then. When you are BUSY outside, you don't get that cold!
Well, we are oddballs here... I bought my long johns at a Wal-Mart in Colorado on a ski trip a few yrs ago. Got all of the kids a pair there as well. Of course, we were skiing in January and Feb when it was freeeeeezing cold!! Its a dry cold but it is cold. Mine are not your normal thermal material they are a silky material?? I dont know what you call it. They are very thin, they go great under a pair of thin sweats and then my snow pants on top. I get super cold on the long lifts and this helps me. I also wear a gator around my neck sometimes and I pull it over my face on the lifts... Dont forget to keep *hot hands* in your mittens (and do wear mitten style gloves- but i think you were already told that! ). My middle ds says his toes get so cold in his boots that it hurts and he feels like crying on the lifts.... He puts hot hands in his BOOTS. lol I keep chap stic in my pocket as well. One of us (dh or I) will ski with a back pack *or* we will get a locker and put it there until lunch. If it is snowing when you are skiing make sure too have a good pair of goggles... Actually I use goggles all the time and we all wear helmets now... After dh fell and hit a tree with his head, was knocked unconcious for a long time and had a concussion...we decided better safe then sorry. That was an expensive trip btw! lol We were still getting ER bills 9 mos after the trip!! ugh Have fun!!!
We have always worn silk long underwear. I bought mine years ago, but also up in Denver at Target, I think.
What are 'hot hands'??
Hot hands are little packets that you squeeze, or something, and they get warm.
