http://www.math2.org/math/general/arithmetic/fradec.htm

hope this helps ya
good luck in the math department

By Mrsheidi on Monday, September 19, 2005 - 07:34 pm:

you do long division...
you take 5 and divide that by 8. don't forget to put the decimal after the 5.
(when doing these exercises, i always tell my kids to put the top # "in the garage"...meaning inside the long division symbol.)

rounding to the nearest hundredth...
examples:
.345 = .35
.132 = .13

the second spot after the decimal is the hundredth spot. if the next # is a 5 or higher, like in the first example, you round up. it's it's 4 or lower, you round down.

jewlz,

We've got that answer but how do you round to the nearest hundreth? Wouldn't it be 600?

By Jewlz on Monday, September 19, 2005 - 07:36 pm:

http://www.webmath.com/fract2dec.html

this one shows u how to do it .. it looks neat and is full of information

By Missmudd on Monday, September 19, 2005 - 07:37 pm:

If you were using a calculator it would be 5 divided by 8. That gets you the .625. Then you round to the hundreth. To the 10th is .6 to the 100th .63. You round the 1000th place up and remove the five and add one to the 2. Hope that my explaination helps.

By Kaye on Monday, September 19, 2005 - 07:38 pm:

hundredth is the second digit after the decimal, so if they 3rd digit is five or higher you round up, 4 or lower you round down.

By Jewlz on Monday, September 19, 2005 - 07:41 pm:

no its .63 is the answer the first one is tenths and the second one is hundredths and the third one is thousand. u take the the third spot and if its a five or more u round the second one up

Thank you so much ladies!!! We were searching the internet and I told my dd that I'm going to ask the momsview ladies, I knew you guys could help!! I have the most horrible math skills and my daughter and I get frustrated together!!! I love momsview because you ladies are great!!!

By Mrsheidi on Monday, September 19, 2005 - 07:47 pm:

Make sure you pay attention to whether or not she needs to show her work! :) If so, you might have to show her long division rather than using a calculator.

Did you know that you can make a division sign (not the house kind) with your computer? You just hold down the ALT key and push 0247 on the number keyboard.

See: ÷

Pretty cool!!!

By Mom2three1968 on Monday, September 19, 2005 - 07:48 pm:

Will do, thank you so much......

By Mom2three1968 on Monday, September 19, 2005 - 07:54 pm:

I tried that livvy and couldn't get it to work! Maybe it's just me....!

By Livvy on Monday, September 19, 2005 - 07:56 pm:

Don't let up on the ALT key until after you have pushed the 7 key.... is that what's keeping it from working???

By Mom2three1968 on Monday, September 19, 2005 - 08:01 pm:

livvy,

I'm not sure, maybe it would work if I were on the regular computer and not my laptop??

By Livvy on Monday, September 19, 2005 - 08:04 pm:

Maybe...??? Don't know much about laptops...sorry!

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 12:24 am:

Is your num lock on? If that is off, the number pad won't work.

16 ÷ 4 = 4

I was too busy with open house and a work meeting to catch this thread until now!

By Mom2three1968 on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 07:27 am:

Nah that didn't work either must be my crazy laptop!!

By Kernkate on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 08:25 am:

Livvy, Never knew that...it worked for me.
205=4.
Learn something new everyday:)

By Kernkate on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 08:28 am:

ok maybe not, it showed right on the preview screen and then it came up wrong. Weird!
