Faking a need for glasses
Have any of you heard of kids failing an eye exam just to get glasses? I have been taking Gabe to the eye Dr. since April getting his eyes checked. They have checked and rechecked and even referred him to a surgeon. He told me that he has some abnormalities, but, it doesn't seem that he needs glasses. Both of my sons are colorblind, but, they have faired well in life so far ( 7th and 4th graders). Both of the Dr's that we have seen said that he is either displaying attention seeking behavior, or he could have a very bad eye disease. I took him to the optical center and bought him a pair of glasses with demo lenses and suddenly, he can see perfectly. Isn't that amazing? I am going to take him back to the surgeon one more time with the demo glasses and let him do an exam with the new glasses. I feel kinda bad for tricking him this way, but, it's the only way I could be to the bottom of this mysterious & sudden vision loss. I am going to post a pic that I took of him in his new specs.
I haven't heard of any kiddo doing that, but I wore zero prescription glasses when I was in graduate school because I realized professors treated you better if you looked smart. (I am smart, but didn't look stereotypically smart.) It made a big difference oddly enough. For kiddos, I would think if they wanted to wear glasses for some reason they would say so up front and then you could either get them some zero prescription glasses or convince them they are blessed they don't need them. You certainly have a curious situation!
My daughter did!!! She had a friend in school who had cute glasses (think this was either K or 1st grade) so she flunked the eye exams!
ps. she also had some reading delays and the "i can see, i need glasses' helped her to rationalize her reading delays.
Is he liking the opposite sex yet? Maybe a girl said that glasses are cute, or maybe one of the popular boys wears glasses. I wonder if he would want to go to the doctor as much if he had to earn the $ to pay for the deductible? LOL
I remember wanting glasses when I was in elementary school, but I was a bit nearsighted, so I got them. Anyway, it was 4th grade, and a lot of people were getting glasses, so it was a "fitting in" thing. I guess what I'm saying is it's not uncommon, though I have to admit it was surprising that he went to the trouble of faking poor vision.
Wow. I got my first pair of glasses when I was 5. I had no need to play games about it, since it was pretty much decided by other people that I needed glasses! That is funny that some kids WANT to wear glasses!
