Cooking question--ham

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive September 2005: Cooking question--ham
By Pamt on Monday, September 12, 2005 - 02:15 pm:

I have a spiral sliced Hormel ham with the glaze packet from the grocery store. I won't get home from work tomorrow until about 5:45 or 6:00. Can I mix up the glaze (maybe with extra water) and put the ham (fully cooked--the kind you just heat up) and put them both in my crockpot on low for about 10 hours?? Will it dry out too much or do you think it will be okay?

I think it would be ok as long as the lid is on. Never tried it tho so if it turns out bad it isnt my fault :)

That is a long time for a fully cooked ham. I won't swear to it, but I do think it would dry out. I have never tried it though either, so I am only guessing too and if you can do it and I said you can't, it isn't my fault either. LOL

Thanks you are both such a big help--LOL. :) I want proven results because it was a $14 ham. Any others....

I've done this before though I can't remember the brand of the ham. I bought it at Sam's club though. Ours was just fine. The worst thing was that it just sort of falls apart when you go to take it out of the crockpot.

I do alot of things in the crockpot for 10 hours simply because that is how long we are gone from our house during a work day.

duh, I forgot the part you really asked about. Yes, I put just a bit more water in it. The most important part is to make sure the lid is on tight.

Yes. You could even pour a can of coke over it to help keep it moist.

Ham is fully cooked, so that does seem excessive. Can you put it on a timer for just a couple of hours, or have someone turn it on for you in the afternoon. I have used timers such as one uses for lights, but made sure they were "heavy duty" for things like this before.

Or, heat it tonight to get it glazed and serve it cold tomorrow?

How many pounds are we talking and is there a bone?

I checked with a good friend who is quite the chef and she recommends AGAINST it as she thinks it will really dry out. Can you cook it another night? On a day you'll be home?

By Luvn29 on Monday, September 12, 2005 - 06:25 pm:

How about cooking it tonight, and then slicing it and reheating it in the oven tomorrow afternoon for dinner. It will still taste just as good.

We just had a glazed spiral ham friday for my hubby's birthday. It still tasted just as good heated up even in the microwave!

It would only take a little while to reheat it already sliced.

I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't cook it that long in a crockpot, especially since it is already sliced in the spiral cut because I would be afraid of drying it out...

LOL..well, take your pick. You either can or you can't. We are all the helpful bunch aren't we!! LOL This post is cracking me up for some reason. LOL

LOL!!! Me, too, Vicki! Hope no one ever depends on us for a life altering decision! hehe!!!

I bet she's more confused than ever, now!

It makes me laugh too and I really needed that. So...I have figured that DH should beat me home by about 30 minutes so I'm just going to have him put it in the oven on 250--LOL

just wanted to let you know that I came straight home from a very looong day substituting in a first grade classroom, complete with an assembly and grandparent's Day for lunch, and checked on this post to see the decision!!!

How bad is that????
