Sushi, do you like it?
I have never had it but am tempted to try some. Any recommendations for a first try?
I can't get past the smell of the seaweed. Ugh!! I've tried some fruit sushi, but I don't like any of it. I actually think that people who say they like it are faking it because they think it's cool. I honestly don't know how I could eat something that smells so nasty.
Tried it, can't even swallow it. All the kids love it, but not this Mom!
Never tried it and not sure if I ever will. I'm allergic to some seafoods so I'm leery.
I'm not an sushi connoisseur, but i do like the California Rolls, they don't contain raw fish, and i think that are a good start before moving on to other kinds of sushi/sashimi. (sashimi is not rolled in seaweed, but formed by hand) Have you ever had the wasabi that is served with sushi? I remember the first time i had tried sushi, i used way too much and and boy is it hot! defitinetly will clear your sinus passage! LOL. After everyone had a good laugh at me, i was told to mix a little in with the soysauce to dip in and put a little piece of the pickled ginger on top. i like trying new foods, so i think if you are interested, go for it, the worst that can happen is that you dont like it
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, sushi... One of my favorite foods. You can not really "taste" the seaweed, you eat the whole piece and taste it as a whole. If you are afraid of the seaweed then try sushimi... no seaweed. Try it, let me know!
No, I don't eat BAIT!!!!!!!!!
DH loves it and has been trying to get me to eat it for 5 years! Maybe next year we'll see..lol.
California Rolls are the #1 recommended starter sushi. It's the only "sushi" i'll eat to this day besides things like avocado rolls and asparagus rolls. I mainly go because I like the feel of going out to sushi. Oh, and the Raspberry Sake is pretty good, lol.
Sushi is one of my favorites- I make it at home alot as well. California Rolls are a good place ot start-no raw fish. Also philadelphia rolls. Try it, you may be surprised. Some of my least "adventurous eater" friends have ended up loving it!
I eat it a lot for lunch at the office. Tuna and Salmon are good ones. Eel is good. I don't like California Rolls since it's fake crab, but it's a good starter.
LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!! DH and I used to go a couple times a week when we were dating and when we first got married. Now we go out to Sushi a couple times a month. The kids don't eat it but they love the Miso Soup with Tofu in it and the Soy Beans with salt. It won't be long before DS starts to try it, he is already asking questions about it when we are eating it. Of course I will only let him eat the cooked Sushi until he is much older. Philadelphia rolls (If you like Cream Cheese) and Soft Shell Crab Rolls are yummy.
Oh know I love it. If you like it try the sashimi - no rice. Just the fish too. Beginners try the california roll and tuna rolls. I would just get the sushi platter. I never like everything on it but I like most things. Salmon roll. - it is smoke salmon. So it is like having salmon and cream cheese and bagel. LOL. California roll using artifical crab but it is good. I order my favorite: philadelphia roll Tuna roll Salmon roll Eel roll. - They cook the eel and it is delicious. Just skin.
Ditto the California Rolls!! My DH likes most everything else. My true favorite though...Vegetable Tempura! Carrots! Yummeeee!
I don't love sushi, but I do like it okay..lol. My suggestion is to go to a buffet, or a place that has a sushi bar. You can see it that way, have a piece, either like it or not. I think if a place has dim sum, they also so small portions of sushi. I personally don't like the seaweed, but can tolerate a little bit. Most sushi that you find in american restruants is pretty normal, a little piece of meat, a veggie, surrounded by rice and then rolled in seaweed. They also have those little tofu packets. The other thing I would have wanted someone to tell me, the rice, isn't just normal white rice It is mixed with rice wine vingear and another seasoning, this way it sticks together. So it has a slighly bitter, slightly sweet taste. I say go for it, you only live once, if you don't like it then lesson learned. I don't eat the wasabi, but do eat it with soy sauce, i think that really cuts down the seaweed flavor.
We had it at a very nice rest in Beunos Aires. Some of it I liked some of it I didnt. I remember liking the Salmon. But I LOVE Salmon anyway. lol Go for it! I LOVE to try new things. We even ate goat while we were there. A little tough for my liking but not horrible.
Now, smoke salmon and a little wasabi is good and if that's sushi then, I guess I like it! LOL
My whole family loves sushi and sushi was the only form of "meat" I could keep down with my second pregnancy! My 5yo and 9yo mainly eat ebi (cold cooked shrimp on rice) without wasabi or tuna roll (raw) although they regularly try new types. Both dks began eating sushi when they were toddlers. Dh and I eat an assortment of both raw and cooked sushi and we eat it out or make it at home. IMO, sushi is an acquired taste and not everyone likes it the first time they try it. A good place to start is a tempura roll, ebi, california roll, salmon roll, or a vegetable roll such as cucumber. Another thing you can do is ask the wait-staff at the restaurant to recommend types of sushi for beginners. Annie, I think you are in the P'cola area, right? The best place to have sushi there is Yamatos (it's on Navy Blvd, if I remember correctly). That was my and dh's favorite restaurant when we lived there (8 yrs ago).
I have never tried it and have no desire to. DS Tom who is 19 loves it.
Andi, any recommendations around here? DH likes Hana off the 78 but I think their California Rolls are gross. We both like Mikko on Carlsbad Village Dr. but they don't have a big variety.
I agree with Pamt though, I think a lot of people I see going out to eat Sushi are faking out because they think they are being cool - I have personally seen people looking like they are going to gag while they eat it, then they put on the *fake smile* and chatter.......I'm not denying that many people honestly DO like it, but I see people eating it who clearly DON'T like it.... makes me wonder...... I, for one, won't be spending my money on food I don't really like! LOL
I've never tried it. Don't think I want to.
LOL karen! I think it taste different than you expect it to, which accounts for some of those looks. Honestly sushi get a bad rap, you think raw meat and seaweed.. EWW! But most of it doesn't have raw meat, and it is clearly labeled if it does. EPI is literally a peeled boiled shrimp on a bed of rice, you like shrimp, you like rice, it has that funny sweet/bitter taste, but you will like it. The seaweed on all of them are pretty thin, with a little soy or wasabi that just goes away! My kids all enjoy sushi, but they mostly like the epi, but they like the crab meat ones.
Oh and I have a friend who eats seaweed sheets for snack (like i do chips), it is an aquired taste i suppose (carb free, low low calories..LOL)
I can take it or leave it. I find it to be a bit bland unless I put tons of wasabi on it.
Actually you can walk in and just get an sushi appetizer to see if you like it. I think they sell california roll as an appetizer. Rather than order alot of stuff.
Thanks everyone! Stacy, I do live in P'cola. Yamatos is still here. We were going to go out to eat tonight and I would have suggested this restaurant, we haven't eaten there for years, but I have a headache, so we are staying in. We don't have any "sushi bars" in this area, that I know of. Do you remember Joe Patti's seafood market? They have had a sushi area in there for about two years now. I am thinking of going there this week and picking some up. I'll try the California rolls, the Philadelphia rolls and anything else that has cooked seafood. I'll let you all know how it goes.
I'm so sorry you have a headache! Yamatos was always so yummy. We liked to sit in the tatami room although their hibachi was great to. Yes, I remember Joe Patti's! We still go there to stock up on seafood whenever we come for a visit, but we haven't been back to P'cola in over 2 years and I didn't know they had a sushi area now. Is the sushi freshly made-to-order or pre-made? I wouldn't waste my money on the pre-made stuff. Pre-made doesn't taste nearly as good as made-to-order. Dh was born and raised in P'cola and I went to school and graduated from GBHS and we definitely miss the area and still get homesick from time to time and talk about moving back there someday.
I love Sushi! Very healthy for you too.I like the spider rolls and anything with tuna.
All I can say about Sushi is...YUCK!!! I don't like it, but Chris loves it. He also likes Sardines.
YUCK YUCK YUCK don't even like the smell of the resturants that serve it. Karen -- I have one of those friends that gag it down because it's "cool" I just laugh and eat my hamburger! lol...
I have never tried it because my dh that will eat anything just about lost it when he tried it. He said that it was the texture he couldn't handle. It has never really interested me.
I love it! The hardest food thing about being pregnant was not being able to eat sashimi! I am picky about sushi ... it has to be just right. I like sashimi better - no rice - just raw fish and wasabi! My favorite is Maguro - the red tuna, but I really like it all. Mackrel and Yellowtail I'll eat, but I'm not to fond of. Ame
Joe Patti's sushi is made to order, of course no place to sit and eat it though. Take home, only. They also have a gourmet section and a new wine area. I go there once a onth or so to get Farmer's cheese (soft curd) which I can't find any where else. My dd also loves their sourdough bread loaves. I am going to try some very soon. The very next time I go to Joe P's. I may even get there this week. Wednesday, hopefully. I'll start slow.... I've been getting a sinus headache late am for the past several days. I hate taking meds for it, so I prolong my pain. Silly, I know. No infection; it just must be the time of year, the time in my life or the low/high pressure in the air.
