10 yrs old and can't use the playground
My dd is in 5th grade this year, and I just realized at the parents' meeting that that class is considered "too old" to play on the school playground (except during the 1/2 hour of what passes for PE two days a week). If they get to the school before 8 (which my dd does, since she has to go with big sister, who catches the bus to the h.s. at 7:40), they have to hang around outside the school with the middle school kids until the doors open. Part of it is logistics...there are 90 5th graders this year and the playground is small, but good grief! It makes me sad that little 10 yr-old kids can't play and run around.
Last yr my son was in 5th grade, and his class was not allowed to play on the playground either. They said his class was too old as well. So when they had recess, they were allowed to go outside, but had to play kickball, or just stand around and talk etc..
And they wonder why childhood obesity is on the rise....
hmm i wonder if this is the same way at my kids school if it is you can be sure i won't be doing any fundraisers for sure not that i like doing them anyways = ) ... considering this because one of the years this is what the fundraisers were for the playground equipment.
I'm sorry but that makes me mad! It's just stupid! I love to go to the playground and swing on the swings and go down the slide and I'm 38 years old! Post the article about all the pregnancies, maybe they'll change there minds. If they cannot accomodate these kids on the playground they must do something else and come up with a solution that works for everyone.
That's one thing our PTA is working towards getting. They said the playground we have now is geared more towards the littler kids and they're raising money to build one for the bigger kids. BUT, they're not telling the olders ones that CAN'T play on it. What are they supposed to do during recess? Hang out and figure things to do to get into trouble??? A bunch of 5th graders with idle time on their hands sounds like trouble. Jmho
That's sad. Our Intermediate School (4-6) has an awesome new playground. DS, who is going into 4th Gr., can't wait to try it out.
They want them to stand around and talk? Sounds like a parfect way to get into trouble! I cannot believe that they would think 5th graders are to old. That is just stupid. And I agree, it's no wonder our kids are overweight, here goes my Dr Phil voice;"What are they thinking!"
Dd just started middle school (grades 5-8) and there isn't even a playground!! They have a little something right after lunch in the gym where they can play kickball or basketball or a couple of other little things. Or they are allowed to just hang out and talk with their friends. While I am not nuts that "recess" is over, I am very glad that they at least have this little bit of free time to just hang out with their friends. She switches every class this year and every class has different people in it, so lunch and this little free time is the only time she has to just be with her friends for a little down time. I think that is important in their day. She also does have gym every day and for 6 weeks she will actually have it twice a day. So the physical activity is kind of covered. I just like they can still have a little social time.
We don't have such a goofy rule for the schools in Sheboygan! Sheesh!
Back when I was in school (in the 60s), we had a HUGE school yard, and it was divided into K-3 and 4-6. As a 6th grader, I loved to swing and play tether ball and hang on the monkey bars (gee, aren't those illegal now because of liability??). *sigh* We also live in a small town, so I naturally worry about all the free time. Like someone said in the h.s. pregnancy post, what else is there to do in a small town? It worries me. It also worries me that we are in such a hurry to get our kids to grow up, that they aren't allowed to be children.
That's horrible. No one is too old for a playground, in my opinion. The whole middle school mentality makes kids grow up too soon. At my college, a group of us were seriously considering a petition/fundraising drive to build a playground on our college campus! We had overwhelming support from the students we surveyed, who agreed that they'd welcome the chance to swing, slide, or tetter-totter between classes rather than just standing around!
I haven't ever heard of anything like that.
I would attend the next pta/pto meeting and ask for money for things the older kids can use - basketballs, jump ropes, etc. or better yet have the pto/pta do a older class survey of what kinds of things they'd like to have to play with at the playground.
