Laser Hair Removal

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive August 2005: Laser Hair Removal
By Shellyg on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 - 11:38 pm:

I HATE shaving, I have to do it every day. I get horrible skin rashes and my legs are a mess. I have dark, thick hair on my legs (paints a pretty picture,eh?) and light skin. I have heard that is perfect match for the hair removal. I would want to do my WHOLE leg and bikini line.
Has anyone done it? How was it, what was the cost, and did it work?

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, August 25, 2005 - 07:36 am:

Never done it, but we must be sisters, if I don't shave, you KNOW it. LOL

My best friend went through the laser hair removal earlier this year and was very disappointed with it. The cost was high and the results were poor. She was repeatedly told she would need more treatments for it to work and they would never guarantee that she would see any results.:(

You may want to try waxing. It would last a whole lot longer than shaving.

I would be very leery of laser removal. I think, as Tunnia says, you would probably require multiple treatments, and there is always a risk of scarring. Try waxing (ouch), as Michele suggests.

Here are some links to medical sites (I don't go to sites "selling" a procedure when I want relatively unbiased information):
This is an article frm the Mayo Clinics on CNN's site

http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/library/HQ/00981.html

The FDA: http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/consumer/laserfacts.html

And, finally,a site with "hair removal facts" for consumers:
This article is specifically on laser hair removal, history, types of devices:

http://www.hairfacts.com/methods/laser/laserhistory.html

I also suggest you go to the home page.

Wow Ginny, thanks for all the links.. Yikes!
Tunnia, any after effects on your friend? What percentage of hair grew back?
I am NOT a candidate for waxing. I HATE the feel of hair on my legs and in order for waxing to work, you have to let your hair grow out.

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, August 25, 2005 - 04:40 pm:

Ditto that! And if mine grew out, I'd look like Magilla Gorilla's grandma!

By Tunnia on Thursday, August 25, 2005 - 09:05 pm:

My friend's major after effect was redness for about a day. She had no reduction in the amount of hair and when she voiced concerns she was told she would need multiple sessions and when she finally complained that she was not getting any results for her money she was told that there were no guarantees that it would work.:(

By Feona on Friday, August 26, 2005 - 08:35 am:

That is great. It is expensive too...

My friend/aquantance had it done and to hear her talk, it was the best thing ever! LOL I think she had two treatments and according to her, it is gone and no more shaving!! She can talk a good game though sometimes.
