What are you a "snob" about?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive August 2005: What are you a "snob" about?
By Mrsheidi on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 10:21 am:

DH and I are quite frugal...but, there are things we are "snobs" about. I will buy the cheapest things, but when it comes to getting my eyebrows waxed or my hair done...I feel like an absolute "snob". I also will not buy cheap toilet paper!! LOL!

DH loves Gentleman Jack and I think that's what he splurges on from time to time...
What are you a "snob" about?

By Paulas on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 10:26 am:

I don't know if this is considered snobby or not but I have to have name brand ketchup and mayo...can't stand the store brands.

What is gentleman Jack?

By Ilovetom on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 10:37 am:

Yes- hair here too. Nothing worse than a bad haircut.

TP here too.

I teach preschool- so I am also a construction paper snob. I know good paper when I see it.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 10:43 am:

13yo dd was REALLY hungry for strawberry ice cream with actual chunks of strawberry in it, so we bought a better brand of ice cream, that was more expensive than the store brand (Kemps)

I like cottonelle toilet paper, but do sometimes buy Angel Soft (depends what store we are at)

Gotta have Heinz Ketchup

Gotta have DOLE fruit bowls. We have tried the Del Monte brand, but they just AREN'T as good!

By Tink on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 11:55 am:

Toilet paper, haircuts, and dish soap are usually things I will pay more for. Quality bras are a must with a large chest. The days of picking up a cute but flimsy bra at Target are long gone! Oh, and batteries! I've found a definite difference in how long they last. Actually, I can think of several other things. I must be quite a *snob*!

By Reds9298 on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 12:26 pm:

My hair!!!!(the $ I spend on my cuts, shampoo and conditioner LOL), purses, undies, and (I'll get nailed on this one probably) fake jewelry. If it's not the real thing I'd just rather not have it. (It doesn't have to be big, it just has to be REAL :)) Also hotels/vacations. I'll pretty much buy anything generic at the grocery if I already know we've tried and like it. Let me just add that I'm getting less 'snobby' in my one-income days LOL!!!!

By Latonya on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 12:33 pm:

Fabric Softner-I can't stand the cheap stuff. You might as well not use any. I but Downy, Snuggles, or Gain.

By Yjja123 on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 12:51 pm:

I am a snob about jewelry. No costume jewelry. I will wear some sterling silver but prefer white gold or platinum. Antique Art Deco jewelry is my favorite.
I cannot stand fake wood or stapled furniture. I prefer solid wood antiques over new furniture.
We only use Crest cinnamon toothpaste, Hellmans mayo, Jif pb, Lipton tea, Bounty papertowels, & cottenelle TP. Our shampoos/conditioners are from Aussie.
I only use Bath & Body Works lotions and potions.
OK...I just realized that I have a lot of "required" brands LOL :)

By Eve on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 01:04 pm:

Hmmm, car seats are about the only thing. I'm a huge fan of Britax seats. It's love, what can I say? Other than that, I can't think of anything I am "snobby" about. Usually, I find a brand that I like and I buy it. If it's Walmart brand, then so be it.

Ditto the Heinz kethchup and Cottonelle TP. Also, Hellman's mayo. But, I don't think that is snobby. I just prefer them. :)

By Colette on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 01:10 pm:

Ditto tp and haircuts etc.

the only grocery things that I am truly adamant about is organic chicken and milk - the only kind I buy is Stonyfield organic - we drink a lot of milk and eat a lot of chicken so I insist on it. I try and stock up when it goes on sale.

By Kaye on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 01:21 pm:

Hmmm....I am a snob about a lot too :) Sheets, there is nothing like good high thread count, good cotton sheets. I buy a certain brand of chicken. I like good cosemetics, daywear by estee lauder, beautiful perfume. Hmmm...i am frugal, but I have found if you buy good stuff it will last longer, so I tend to wait and buy a nice purse, I have a DB that i have had for 7 years it still looks brand new. Same with clothes. My true snob feature is I hate laminate wood flooring, I want hard woods, I need to go laminate for durability, but it looks cheaper and feels and sounds different, I am probably going to suck it up and go laminate, but not sure. I also hate in the floor duct work (reminds me of a trailer house), but there is nothing that matches the feel of a sturdy foundation (it's a southern thing!)

By Vicki on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 01:35 pm:

I am definately a name brand snob. I have tried many generics and just can't take them. I am also a high thread count sheet snob. I love nice purses and will save to buy them if I have to. I guess I am snobby about allot of things now that I think about it. LOL Funny thing is, I rarely notice what other people have. So I don't think I do it for any other reason than I just love great quality!!

By Reds9298 on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 02:00 pm:

I'm the same Vicki - I never look at someone else's purse and think bad thoughts, *I* just have to have a certain kind. It's just a personal thing!

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 02:08 pm:

Toilet paper, hair products, good jeans, ketchup, mayo, bras, coffee, lettuce (no iceburg for me!), lean cuts of meat.......

By Emily7 on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 02:19 pm:

Toilet paper is I think the only thing I buy that has to be a particular brand.
Nothing wrong with living in a trailer house Kaye, if it is all you can afford at least you have a roof over your head.

By Bea on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 02:26 pm:

I guess I'm an antique snob. I won't buy a reproduction. I won't hang cardboard prints on my walls....only paintings, lithographs and photography. I'm also very loyal to Agner purses, and won't carry any other. I only wear one perfume....Jessica, by Jessica McClintock. There are food brands I prefer...Heinz catsup, Hellman's mayonnaise, Jif peanut butter and Ken's Steak House salad dressings, to name a few. I only use Revlon Colorsilk on my hair, but I will try different colors, LOL.

By Melanie on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 02:30 pm:

Haircuts, shampoo and conditioner, skin care products, bras, tp...

By Bellajoe on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 02:59 pm:

Haircuts, Hotels...when we go on vacation i will not stay in a Motel 6 sort of place. it does not have to be a 5 star hotel (which we could not afford anyway) but i'm not staying in those cheapy pay by the hour sort of hotels either. They are just gross to me.

I am also a name brand sort of girl when it comes to grocery shopping. Heinz Ketchup and Jif PB for sure.

I have to buy good jeans...Polo, Liz Claiborne, only when on sale and onlly because those are what fit me the best.

I guess I am a bit of a snob about a lot of things....but then i don't look down on people who don't agree with me. So maybe that does not constitute as a snob.?

By Mrsheidi on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 03:09 pm:

LOL! Isn't it amazing at how much we love things of quality and won't waver?
And, Kaye and Vicki...I very much agree about thread count...I went to the Paris Hotel in Vegas and just about couldn't sleep because I could swear the thread count was 50 on those darn sheets!!!

And, Tink, I hear you on those bras. I love the minimizer bras...my last one was $60!!! Ugh.

Eve, I agree about the Britax. We bought one and I thought DH was going to have a heart attack it was so expensive. But, we got the Marathon so I'm hoping it will last!!!

By Mrsheidi on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 03:13 pm:

Oh, and Gentleman Jack is a very smooth Whiskey. If he had it his way, he would get the Single Barrel that is the most pure.
Me, I'm a spiced rum type of girl!

By Kaye on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 06:59 pm:

LOL i am also a big snob on hotels too! Ultimately I think the difference in what makes a true snob is if you like or do things only for the look or how it appears to others. But if you do things for you and what makes YOU feel good then it is just a strong preference. Emily commented about trailer houses...ya know they just are creepy to me, feel unstable, I honestly could never live in one. I would choose a cheap apartment or my car if those were my choices, this doesn't go for just some trailers, but all of them, RV's, pop ups, prebuilt homes. It is a whole sensory experience issue, hard to explain. But my ryland home in cincy had those floor ducts and I felt the exact same way, I spent most of my time in the basement because it felt more stable.

By Boxzgrl on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 07:03 pm:

Britax carseats here too :)

Victoria's Secret and Bath and Body Works (especially for home and car fragrances)

Chicken Breast fillets, not just chicken breasts.

Homemade iced tea sweetened, not the carton or jug kind.

Anything home decor.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 07:30 pm:

Karen, no iceberg lettuce for me, either. It's gotta be dark green!

My dd just mentioned going to the grocery store where they pack your groceries for you, as opposed to the place where you have to pack your own! LOL!

My kids refuse to buy clothes at Walmart and I can't say that I blame them, because I think it's all ugly, too!

Boneless, skinless chicken breasts! One time we were talking about this, at a family gathering and my aunt says, "Those are so much more expensive!" Well, yeah they are, but you don't have to process them as much!

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 07:45 pm:

I should add Jif to my list too - it's the only peanut butter I buy.

And I am learning to be a sheet snob. I got a 400 thread count set of King sheets on clearance at T J Maxx for $40!!!!!! The condo we stayed in on Sanibel had a set of new, plain white, horribly cheap cotton sheets, which had to have been 50 thread count! LOL I took them off the bed and washed them (it was obvious they had been put on the bed fresh out of the packaging), thinking it would soften them up, but it didn't. They were ROUGH and scratched me, I hated them.

My chicken breasts are boneless/skinless, my ground beef is extra lean. Also don't like Chek or store brand cola - I don't drink it often, but when I do I prefer COKE!

OH and add paper towels to the list - Bounty only for me.

Olive oil - extra virgin or extra extra virgin only.

Body lotion - I don't use Body Shop or Bath & Body Works stuff, but I have to have Nivea or something similar - my skin has gotten very dry since menopause hit, and store brands just don't cut it.

Dawn - as for lettuce, we like red leaf, good romaine and spring mix, when I eat out and order a salad, I ask what kind of lettuce they use - if it's iceburg, I skip the salad.

By Crystal915 on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 08:09 pm:

Bread, I have to have soft honey wheat, I used to buy Nature's Own, but they don't have it here, so I buy Sara Lee. Victoria's Secret is the only place I buy underwear and bras, only the Very Sexy collection bras and Pink collection undies. Coke, I cannot drink the store brand. I have to drink bottled water, tap water tastes funny to me (probably because I was raised with well water, and never drank tap water) Sheets, although I just recently started caring about that. Toilet paper! I like Cottonelle, but they don't have it at the PX so I bought Quilted something, and it's so thin! Baby Soft is junk, Charmin is ok in a pinch, but I'm never buying anything but Cottonelle again! Oh, and my friends and DH have convinced me to stop buying the cheapest shampoos and conditioners, so I took a step up to Aussie. It's not the Biolage the hubs would prefer, but it's better than the cheap stuff!

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 09:36 pm:

Karen, those are the lettuces that I like, too! I love spring mix!

NO SAM's CHOICE diet cola! Ugh. I can barely drink the stuff. It's what Gary's dad would always buy! Bleah. He was too cheap to buy brand-name soda.

I tried to cheap out the last time I bought sheets. Next time, I'm holding out for something nicer. These sheets were rough, in the beginning. They are better now, though.

By Vicki on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 07:44 am:

Oh Karen, you haven't even felt heaven yet on the sheets. LOL I just got a set of 1200 thread counts!! Just wait until you work your way a little higher... you will be a snob for sure!! LOL

By Kaye on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 07:48 am:

LOL vicki, I thought the same thing, I just bought my first set of 800 thread count a year ago and have been looking ever since for more with a good price.

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 08:17 am:

Vicki, I know, I've slept on really good sheets, but never bought any. I had no idea what a difference it made, I am slowing working my way up the thread count ladder. LOL I almost bought an 800 T.C. set of sheets a few weeks ago, but it wasn't available in the color I wanted in King. I still have a little problem with the cost of the *good* sheets!

By Breann on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 12:50 pm:

Hotels, hair products and chicken, lol.

No cheap hotels for me. Only biolage hair products for our family, and only boneless, skinless chicken breasts. No bone-in, or legs or thighs or anything of the sort :)

That's about it. With other things, I shop around until I find something I like, then I stick with it. If the store runs out, I just get a different brand.
But the three above mentioned things are a MUST!

By Missmudd on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 01:06 pm:

I am not very snobby, but I DONT like leaf lettuce, give me the crunchy, no nutrient, boring ol iceberg lettuce, but only if it is fresh :).

By Frasersmama on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 02:45 pm:

Haircuts, underwear and good red wine. I do likes my brand name clothes, but sadly they are very rarely in my budget....SALE RACK!

By Heaventree on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 08:19 pm:

After reading all the responses, I have to agree with almost everyone so I guess that makes me a BIG SNOB!

TP, groceries that includes things like ice cream hey if you are going to have the calories you might as well enjoy them! Underwear for sure, sheets - yes, you spend half your life in bed and once you buy good sheets, you'll never go back to cheap cotton.

Shoes, clothes and purses.

Hotels, I always stayed in 5 star hotels while traveling for work, now that I'm not working, I do everything I can to try and think of creative ways to stay in the same type of hotels.

Chocolates - same as ice cream.
Wine - same as chocolate.
Shampoo and especially conditioner.
I always try to buy the best that I can afford or save up until I can afford it.

I had to make an expection this year - cars. I love Japanese cars, had a Camry and wanted a Toyota van, had to settle for a Dodge. Shouldn't complain though, it's brand new.

I really wanted a Mazda RX8 - nice little sports car, I figured if I could cut off the roof, I could easily fit two car seats in it, couldn't convince DH.

mazda

By Ilovetom on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 10:29 pm:

That made me LOL.

By Annie2 on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 11:05 pm:

I have my brand names I stick to : Hellmans, Heinz, A1, Scotts tp, for sure.

I guess the main thing that I have, which we pay for each month, that I adore are my TIVO and XM Radio for the car.

By Mommmie on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 11:09 pm:

Tissues - Puffs with Lotion.

By Dawnk777 on Friday, August 19, 2005 - 01:32 pm:

I like Puffs or Kleenex. If I have a cold and my nose is very sore, then I like the lotion kleenex.

By Frasersmama on Friday, August 19, 2005 - 02:51 pm:

What a bunch of Moms we are, going on about ketchup and toilet paper - tee hee :)

By Juli4 on Friday, August 19, 2005 - 03:43 pm:

luvs diapers, tide detergent, dawn dishsoap, there are probably others but I can't think of them. I am don't necessarily have to buy brand name stuff, but I am willing to spend a bit more to get quality. I don't have to have brand name stuff that people can see necessarily. When buying for just the family I will buy a lot of generic food and suchm but when we have people over or something I buy the good stuff. Salad dressings mostly. I like the name brand stuff, but when you can get a bottle for $1 as opposed to almost $4 then I tend to go for cheaper. Hair cuts and stuff I don't pay a lot for. My husband goes to a place that gives $5 haircuts and he is happy with that.

By Dawnk777 on Friday, August 19, 2005 - 06:12 pm:

Okay, don't need fancy dish soap, but I definitely needed brand-name diapers. Once in a great while, DH would bring home an off-brand. They didn't fit as nice and were nowhere near as absorbent as the nice ones! I didn't have a preference for Huggies, Luvs, or pampers, but it had to be one of the three!

By Karen~moderator on Friday, August 19, 2005 - 08:27 pm:

ROFL Dawn! I remember when J & J were babies, X picked up some grocery store brand diapers for me. Not only did they stink with a funny odor to begin with, they crumbled/fell apart when wet! And he got mad and could not understand when I threw them all out. Huggies were my favs at the time.

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, August 20, 2005 - 12:49 am:

We are "sausage snobs" at our house! We won a little sausage package from the grocery store, with summer sausage and cheese in it. The cheese was good, but the Klement's sausage is too fatty for my taste. The sausage we buy from a local butcher is soooooo much better. I keep feeding my pieces to the dog. I really shouldn't even eat anymore of it. I can't stand it! Klement's is a Wisconsin sausage, but once you have had Sheboygan sausage, there just is no other kind. We will take Miesfeld summer sausage and Miesfeld's bratwurst anytime!

By Karen~moderator on Saturday, August 20, 2005 - 10:35 am:

Cheese - Kraft, DiGiorno or Sargento....

Cream Cheese - Philly only!

Quilted Northern toilet paper...

Colgate toothpaste....

Venus razors....

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, August 20, 2005 - 04:19 pm:

Karen, they make Sargento cheese, about 10 miles from my house and the Northern toilet paper is made about an hour from my house! LOL! You keep buying those WI products!

For that matter, Cottonelle, Kleenex tissues, Huggies, Pull-ups, and Little Swimmers are made about 1-1/2 hours from me in Neenah, WI. (Or at least the company headquarters are there!)

By Cocoabutter on Sunday, August 21, 2005 - 01:08 am:

Kraft Miracle Whip

Zest Bar Soap

Tide Laundry Det.

Downy Fab Soft

Coca-Cola

BREYER'S Ice Cream

Puffs Tissues

By Mrsheidi on Sunday, August 21, 2005 - 09:06 am:

Oh, I forgot, yes...Intuition razors!! No longer need shaving cream and it's SO much faster!!!

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, August 21, 2005 - 02:02 pm:

My 16yo loves her Venus razor! I suppose I will have to spend the money and try one myself, one of these days. I just use the cheap Bic ones!
