Any morning sickness advice that works?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive August 2005: Any morning sickness advice that works?
By Anonymous on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 09:55 am:

I am so sick. :(

By Rayanne on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 09:57 am:

I have heard that peppermint really helps. Good Luck, I haven't had morning sickness yet, and didn't with DD, so I really am not much help. Sorry. I hope you feel better.

By Luvn29 on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 10:25 am:

Root beer. Yep! Sounds crazy. I have lots of problems with nausea, and root beer has always helped. Good root beer... like A&W or IBC in the bottles is best. Something in it helps soothe the stomach.

I lived on pepto tablets that you can chew. Also, if all else fails, and it is really bad, phenergan is a prescription drug that works wonders. I was on this the entire time I was pregnant with my second child. I was extremely sick, and could not keep anything down, and so I had to have something. I still always have a bottle for times I need it. And it is safe for baby.

By Mommmie on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 10:25 am:

I got some prescription suppositories from my doctor and it was the only thing that helped. I had it bad.

By Luvn29 on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 10:26 am:

yes, phenergan comes in liquid (YUCK!!!), pills, and suppositories.

By Mrsheidi on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 10:30 am:

I just had to stay away from anything grilled. Or, any trucks with diesel.

I was on my way to the high school where I was teaching and followed a big diesel truck. Well, needless to say it made me VERY sick. I was throwing up in the HS parking lot as parents were dropping off their kids in the morning!! I was SO embarrassed...mainly because people didn't know I was pregnant yet and I didn't want them to think I was hung-over or drunk. That, and you really don't want ANYBODY, much less the parents of your students, to see you puking. UGH.

By Kaye on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 11:39 am:

Anything cold made me feel better. Popsciles, icees etc. Also try to keep something in your stomach, a few crackers, etc, it helps if you do puke to have something in there!

By Nanaoie on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 11:42 am:

Chi Chi chips helped me.

By Hlgmom on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 12:28 pm:

They make some great lollipops called preggy pops- made with ginger- my friend who was very sick swears by them!

By Karen~moderator on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 03:26 pm:

Ginger is definitely supposed to be good.

By Karen~moderator on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 03:27 pm:

I think I know who you are. I'm sorry you're feeling so sick, but that explains why you haven't been posting much.

I was sure Altoids were a food group.I ate them several times a day at work.

Eat whatever sounds good when your craving it,because it's important to
keep your blood sugar level up.
Even if it's french fries and milk shakes.
High protien foods if you can and whole wheat crackers like AK-MAK in your purse and by the bed.
It only lasts for about 12 weeks.:)

By Annie2 on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 05:24 pm:

Try eating Saltines in the am BEFORE you even sit up. This helped me to at least start my day.
Hang in there! :)

By Eve on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 05:29 pm:

From someone who gets serious morning, noon, and night sickness, nothing really helped me other than medication. I tried everything anyone on this board could name that was natural, diet related, you name it. Finally, I told my Dr. that they needed to help me this pregnancy. (I suffered with my DD with no meds and was unable to even go downstairs and get myself something to drink! I suffered with no help from anyone but my DH when he could run home from work. All until 25 weeks!!)

I've tried Phenergan and it helped slightly, but didn't really do much. This pregnancy they prescribed me Zofran. Let me tell you, I cried out of happiness the first time I took it! It took the edge off and I felt like I could function! I've not been able to stop taking it, but it was an absolute God-send to me. I would have probably been in bed unable to care for myself or my DD had it not been for this wonderful drug! They even have quick dissolve tabs for at first when you can keep nothing down.

If you are feeling miserable and unable to function, please talk to your Dr. and don't let them tell you "this happens to all pregnant women." ((HUGS))

By Eve on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 05:33 pm:

BTW-Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.

By Heaventree on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 06:46 pm:

Try changing your vitamins if you are taking them or switch to just taking Folate (folic acid, should take 0.4 mg per day) until it subsides. The high level of iron in maternity vitamins makes many sick, not to mention causes constipation.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 08:58 pm:

My doctor suggested Vit B6 pills. I never thought they helped very much. Just being 12-13 weeks pregnant is what did it for me. I stopped being sick, at that point, with my first one.

By Amecmom on Sunday, August 14, 2005 - 09:03 pm:

Ditto Annie2. The hardest thing to do is eat, but that always helped me feel better. Also Folic Acid. I took two 800mcg tablets per day. Crackers or pretzles. Feel better.

I couldn't take any of my prenatal vitamins or iron supps for either of my pregnancies.

I had to suffer with my first pregnancy because they wouldn't give me meds, but I kept dehydrating with my second so they gave me meds.

I was only 16 during my first preg, so I wonder if they didn't just chalk it all up to a whiny irresponsible teenager, you know? Of course, they found out different when I gave birth without anything but one pain shot several hours before, AND had to have a dr. go up in me and cut and tear my placenta from my uterus, all while concious with no meds, and without screaming or carrying on.

Okay, off subject, but I didn't have morning sickness, I had all day and all night sickness throughout almost my entire pregnancy.

So if none of this natural stuff, works, don't be afraid to ask for the meds. If you feel bad about that, just remind yourself that they are what are going to help you get your baby the nutrients it needs.

B6 and Unisom

By Karen~moderator on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 07:53 am:

I took B1/B6/B12 injections for most of my pregnancy with Jen - it was *supposed* to help, and I think it did.... some. I also was on an Rx med for the nausea, because I couldn't even keep my own saliva down for a period of time - and it was 24/7 sickness, not just in the morning.

I think if you're feeling *that* sick, you really should talk to your doctor about putting you on something. The Zofran that Eve took is the same med they give cancer patients who are receiving chemotherapy and it works GREAT.

By Kym on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 12:32 pm:

A homeopathic treatment: nux vomica
A Yogi Tea: Ginger
hansens Ginger Ale, must be hansens or one with real ginger in it, not canadian one.

These worked wonders for me, good luck

By Christylee on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 12:36 pm:

Zofran was the only thing that worked for me, I was so sick the entire time and finally when they gave me that it worked and I was able to eat again.

I hope you find something that works for you.

By Clarabel on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 04:49 pm:

Oh, I almost forgot.A simple and natural remedy.
Take some raw ginger root and make a tea out of it,add some honey and fresh lemon juice.
(Also great for colds)
Hope your feeling good today.

By Anonymous on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 08:22 am:

Thanks everybody. The altoids really help in the car with the mint gum.

I actually was able to take a walk with the help of some mint gum the other day.

And I have been to the supermarket for a long shop so that was good.

Vomiting is increasing but at least I can chew gum. I got some rolaids chews too that helped. They have calcium too.

Put some ginger chews in the car. Trying the b6.

Pretty much sweared off milk products, eggs and meat, but then I threw up orange juice so all bets are off. Seems too much liquid or food is no good.

I will tell the doctor tomm. at my appointment how bad I am and see if he will help me. I think you have to be throwing up more than once a day to get prescription meds.

Well, the oj has lots of acid that may be hard on your stomach also...

Just found a maybe helpful article in my new Parenting Magazine that came yesterday.

It is on pg. 99 and has dr. and mommy recommended remedies.

Drs: B6, ginger, and antihistamines.

Mothers: Gatorade, cinnamon gum or candy, one ate raisins throughout the night, and woke up nausea free, one ate a couple bites of bagel and choco milk and then went back to sleep and woke up nausea free, and one ate crushed ice with Coke Syrup mixed in.

I have heard of the coke syrup thing but never tried it. It is supposed to help really severe nausea...

From someone who has had severe morning sickness for a total of ONE year (this is my 5th pregnancy), you don't have to be throwing up daily to get medication. It all depends on how proactive you are in your asking. For me, I was suffering and not throwing up everyday. There is no way I was able to even get out of bed, forget about driving and grocery shopping. So, the medication was very helpful in allowing me to function.

I'm glad to hear you were able to get out and about though! If the mint is working, try making some peppermint iced tea with extra ice! That helped with my DD some.:)

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 12:05 pm:

O.J. is very acid on your stomach, you should probably avoid that altogether right now.

When I had morning (24/7! LOL) sickness so bad, I knew that whatever I had in the morning was coming up, so gross as this sounds, I would have a cup of hot, very sweet tea first thing in the morning. It came up, but it was not nearly as nasty coming up as most other things I could think of.

Another thing my OB told me at the time was not to eat and drink at the same time. In other words, if I was eating, to wait 15 or 20 minutes before I drank something. That might help.

By Anonymous on Sunday, August 21, 2005 - 10:09 am:

The doctor game me some medicine tiban or tebamide - took 3 suppositories in three days.(dose is like 3 a day...) Became very depressed and sleepy. It didn't actually make me sleep anymore than I do but it knocked me out and gave me sleep hangover and I became despondent.
All it did is eliminate the vomiting not the all day sick feeling.
I think I would rather throw up than cry...

By Tunnia on Sunday, August 21, 2005 - 10:33 am:

(((Anon)))

I had severe 24-hour-a-day morning sickness for the first 5 months of my first pregnancy and for 4 months of my second to the point I had to be put in the hospital and given fluids via IV for dehydration and shots for the vomiting. It is really awful to feel so bad and I'm sorry for you.:(

By Karen~moderator on Sunday, August 21, 2005 - 10:52 am:

Anon, there are other meds you can try that may not make you feel that way. Please talk to you doctor - tell him how you reacted to those. There are enough things out there, you should be able to find something that works, doesn't knock you out, and doesn't depress you.

By Eve on Sunday, August 21, 2005 - 12:33 pm:

(((((HUG)))))) Please call your Dr. and tell him you would like to try something else. I would recommend Zofran.(Especially the quick dissolve tablets--you can put them right under your tongue and you won't have time to throw it up. It hits your blood steam quickly.)

They gave me Phenergan first and it didn't work for me at all. I know how depressing this can be and that many people don't understand what you are going through. You can make it through this! Please call your Dr. back right away! Be proactive. I think many Dr.'s are not even sympathetic. Luckily, the new Dr. I've been seeing is young and very empathetic and I just love her. Hang in there!

Have you tried sipping the peppermint iced tea?

By Bellajoe on Sunday, August 21, 2005 - 09:22 pm:

i have not read any of the other responses, so sorry if i repeat somone.

I had morning sickness, but it was not as bad as it could have been.
I just took saltine crackers with me whereever i went. I had them next to the bed, so i could eat some before i even stood up in the morning. Those helped settle my stomach a lot.

Also, the prenatal vitamins made me sick. I stopped taking those and took Centrum One a Day instead. That helped me feel much better.
((((anon))) I hope it goes away soon and you can enjoy the pregnancy!

By Enchens on Thursday, August 25, 2005 - 03:43 am:

Been there once, almost went there twice, but I demanded medication. For my first pregnancy, dr. gave me tigan, and it worked for a bit. I thought it would help with my second, but it didn't, so dr. gave me Zofran. Great stuff.

I also tried the natural remedies before resorting to meds. One I haven't seen mentioned is chamomile tea.

Hope this helps.
