Anyone take karate?
I know some of our kids do, but do any of us "adults"? I'm thinking of joining my kids karate class. The instructor welcomes people of any age over about 5. There was one mom in the class with her kids, but I haven't seen her for about a month or two. She's a teacher, though so they may be gone for the summer. My biggest concern is that I won't be able to keep up with the kids! lol It's one hour each Monday and Wednesday nights. I'm thinking of this because once school starts I won't be able to work out at Curves as often as I do now (5 days a week now, only 3-4 then) and I'd really like to tone. Loosing a few more pounds would be nice, too. I plan to talk to the instructor about my concerns and see what he thinks. So has anyone taken karate classes as an adult? What was it like? Did it kick your butt??? tia for any info.
I have several friends that have taken it, and love it. One family did it as an activity together, they all got their black belts together too!
I would encourage you to join. I was in karate for 10 years and many many adults took karate with their children and some by themselves. They even went farther than their children because they can catch on faster. A lot of the adults became some of my favorite people. The adults even competed and such. It was so much fun. And it will give you a lot of confidnece. My instructor had ladies self defense classes where you could invite your friends and family who didn't attend and it was very good. You will be surprised how well you will do. It does give you good shape because you use a lot of muscles kicking paticualrly your abdomen. You will feel awkward at first but just keep doing it and you will feel better about it. Some of the women felt self conscince about the way they looked doing the moves, but don't worry about that. I am all for karate. For kids and adults.
Thanx for the input, Jann and Juli. I'm going to talk to their instructor tomorrow. Everyone here I've mentioned it to have said "Go for it!" The area between my waist and thighs has always been a problem area for me (my butt just turns into leg! lol). So maybe I need something that will "kick my butt." We'll give this a whirl...
My college boyfriend was into Karate. I took a couple self defense courses and learned how to use a kubaton but didn't get into it other than that. There were hardly any women taking lessons and the guys were VERY serious. No, thanks! LOL! DD went to a b-day party at the Karate center in our town and did great during the lesson. Tried to get my kids interested in taking lessons but that went over like a lead balloon. Oh well... I'll echo, "Go for it!"
