Bank Fees - Vent

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive July 2005: Bank Fees - Vent

Does anyone else find some of there fees ridicoulis? I can't believe what they charge you for. I recently moved a 8 days ago. I have been changing my address and having my mail forwarded.

Well I and they informed me that they could not change my address for me on the phone but that I could send them written notification or go online.

So I go online today to take care of this and I see this fee for $1.00. So I call and ask what is this? Low and behold, I could not believe what I was hearing. I had been charged $1.00 because my statement was mailed out last week and (because it states do not forward) it was returned to them. So there for I got a $1.00 bad address fee.

I may not be so upset if it hadn't made my account negative (remember I just moved) so I used the funds in this account to purchase groceries but mindful to leave .83 cents in the account (my paycheck would be going in the next day so what could it hurt) well I found out in 25 ways. Had I known about this fee or when I tried to change my addresse over the phone had I been 4 warned then I could have prevented this.

I'm sorry about the length but I just had to get this off my chest, I have been upset about it all day. It's like just giving away money.

How frustrating.:( If you call customer service you *may* be able to get the overdraft charges taken off. I've been successful at doing that before. It's certainly worth a try.

Ouch, that is a stupid fee to charge someone & why I always leave at least $20.00 in my account.

We tried to close our account at a bank and our balance was zero for two weeks and they say well we can't close it for another week so then during that week they find something to charge us for. It was like a dollar or something like that and our account overdraws and by the time we find out about it, it was like $75. We took our statement and said that it wasn't our fault we tried to close the account and they didn't make us pay. It was ridiculous. We then went to a credit union and they don't charge for every little thing.

Thanks Michele, I've calmed down some from yesterday, and I just called and spoke to a nice young lady and she not only refunded the overdraft fee but also the $1 as well. Being though I only moved in a short while ago.

Emily, yes thats my policy too keep something there for reasons like this. This is an account that I only have to pay my phone and a few other things out of so money is always there. But with the cost of the U-Haul and paying my helpers. I need funds for the grocery and with the next day being my pay day, I knew that money would be going into this account it would be all right. It's like they get you with something when your guard is down. But thanks for the advice also.

We have an additional savings account at a credit union. Our bank, for a while, was charging us if we saw a teller, more than 4 times/month! They don't anymore. I love that the credit union doesn't charge us ridiculous fees!

That's great, Letishe. I'm glad it worked out! :)

I am definately looking into a credit union. I found out from my bank yesterday there is fee for going over 25 checks a month. Plus being under a certain amount ect... They get you with a lot of crap!

Definately check with a credit union. Mine does not charge for their atms and refunds me any fees charged by atms that are not part of their group. They also give me free checks and overdraft protection.

I'm glad it worked out for you. I can't believe some of these places. We too bank with a credit union and I don't think I will ever go back to a regular bank.

The Credit union that a lot of you are members of sound wonderful. But after this happen a little earlier today I decided to go to my CU website and check out the different fees. Like I said I use this account to pay bills automatically for me, I once had it just as a savings account. But good thing I don't anymore. Beleive it or not one of the fees that my CU charge is a non-activity fee? In other words if this was still just an account that I used to save money in and didnt' take any out or put in a cycle period, I would be charged $5.00 for this. How can you save if you have to pay to save your money?

There aren't any hidden fees associated with my children's accounts which the CU calls young savers accounts,(which is strictly a means of saving money for them) so I'm glad to know that. But I am considering closing my account with them and opening a second account with my bank.

Although your CU may not charge for certain transactions it may be wise to check just what they charge you for, I guess the same is good for any bank also.

We always have activity in our CU account, so that isn't a problem.

The only thing that we have is a $5.00 charge for having less than $500.00 in our account. I never understand why they take out money when you go below a certain amount. They are just making you loose more money. I am a member of a Credit Union too.
