LOL...today was one of those days for me. I have been for sometime thinking about painting something. So today I did. Well kind of...starting at 1 today I bought paint and decided to tackle my smallest room, the powder room. This room is 3.5 ft by maybe 7 feet...tiny. WELL so I started removing wall paper, only to find that under the paper was plain sheetrock, so I had to go back to the hardware store and get some dry wall mudd. I have finally gotten it all even and textured and ready to paint. Hmmmm it is 1 am. Granted I took a short dinner break and a run to Lowe's, but who knew?? Tomorrow I will get to paint! The problem is once you start there is always more that needs it!

UGH! I had the very same problem when repapering an area in my house. Contractors cut corners all the time and you usually don't find out until much later.

I'm impressed you did drywall - I've done it and I hate it! Post some pics when you're done!

You Go Girl!!!!! I could have never done drywall. Definately post pictures when you are done.

Is there wallpaper all over the house? I hate wallpaper... This is why...

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, July 20, 2005 - 08:48 am:

Sheetrock should be drywalled and prepared before wallpapering. My house was purchased new and had wallpaper in 4 different rooms. I have repapered every one of them, and in the kitchen, the wallpaper had been put up directly onto the sheetrock. Not only was it a major pain getting the old paper off, but it damaged the sheetrock badly in some areas and I had to repair that and properly prepare the walls before putting up the new wallpaper. I have to admit, I didn't do a very good job on one particular wall, and *I* can tell by looking at the wallpaper. :-(

Kaye, did you tape and float and all that???? That's *quite* the undertaking, even for a small area. I am anxious to see your *finished product*.

That's great! my mother and step-dad used to do that together. Which comes in handy.. my mom knows how to paint and all that so I can always call her and she helps me out. I am in the process of redecorating the girls room..one step at a time. Good for you, from what I remember it looks like hard work.

I didn't not float and tape, not that brave! But I was able to get all the wall paper off without any damage to the walls. Here is my secret, if you can peel off the top layer, just use a spray bottle of water, soak and a plast trowel, you can scrape it right off (usually). Since the exisiting sheetrock was in such good shape all i did was skim coat it and then textured it. I am painting it so instead of sanding and trying to get it smooth I went with a texture so you couldn't see the flaws. This was a big pain to start, since the builders put the paper in everything was caulked in and I had to cut all the caulk out, baseboards, around the skin, etc. It looks good this am, ready to paint!

Love it!!

WOW! My mom just bought a home that had wall paper in EVERY room and ALL of it had been done right over the sheetrock. She had to pay to have it all drywalled and it cost her thousands of dollars. I saw most of the work on a day by day basis and I am so impressed that you did it yourself! ^5, Kaye!
