Dinner for a friend
I have a dear friend who had major back surgery. Tonight is my night to make dinner for her family. SOOO what have you made when you took dinner to people? I am just looking for ideas!
We always make lasagna to send out, DH makes his own sauce and people love it And there is always enough for leftovers.
Kaye, as a veteran of 2 major back surgeries, I can tell you that ANYTHING will be appreciated! Obviously it's easier for you, and for her family if you make a casserole, or one-dish meal - something like lasagna or meatloaf or a chicken casserole or spaghetti or pot roast, that they can just heat up and maybe throw a salad together to go with it. I'd consider making something that is good leftover, if you are going to make something, it would be a great idea if it was enough for 2 meals for them. My first back surgery, my mom sent a few dishes over and no one else helped me out. My second one, there was no help from anyone at all, so I actually cooked some stuff and froze it a week before, and we ended up eating a lot of takeout, which was expensive and not that good. Truly, whatever you do for your friend will be MUCH appreciated, I can guarantee it!
I say lasagna too. Or you could do some chicken breast and a side salad and then give them the tortillas and fixin's to do fajitas with the left over chicken the next day. Just a thought.
I usually make a chicken pot pie when I take dinner to someone. It is comforting and easy to heat up. Add a green salad and a dozen cookies and dinner is covered. Very nice of you to take dinner. I've been surprised at how rarely that happens anymore. I wasn't brought dinner after the births of any of my dks and my mom has gone through several surgeries with very few people offering to bring anything.
Cori, you are so right about that. In the past 12 years, I've had 5 surgeries. I had barely any help. And the last one, a friend was living with me temporarily at the time, and she did nothing to help, except for make me lunch ONCE.
lasagna always
I usually do a casserole with chicken, or just some chicken breasts with rice, etc., or a roast in the crockpot. We have an organized group at church that organizes a week of meals for people who have had babies or surgeries, so I end up cooking for people a lot. When dd was born, we had a week of meals from people, and 5 of the seven meals were italian! *3* lasagnas!!! So, needless to say, I steer clear of making people lasagna!LOL
I second Michelle...NOT lasagna. People always do stuff like lasagna because it is so easy, so just assume that someone else is bringing it and make something else. I often do chicken and rice, chicken pot pie, roast, or ham, with salad, rolls, and a dessert. After the birth of my first DS someone brought grilled porkchops and they were the best thing ever!! My SS class made dinner at a Ronald McDonald house (for the families who stay there visiting their critically ill children) several years ago and we fixed oven-fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls, and dessert. They said we were the first group EVER to volunteer to cook a meal and NOT cook spaghetti.
I have a friend who had heart surgery on tuesday and Im taking over a taco salad and a bean dip tomorrow. This is what we had for supper tonight with chicken and I have a lot of the stuff to make it.
Well I ended up taking chicken and dressing. I knew a friend did tacos on tuesday and this is exactly two weeks after her surgery, she has gotten a lot of meals. WELL after getting there, she commented that she has had 4 lasagnas, she was so thankful that it wasn't a pasta dish...LOL.
