Clothes on ebay??

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive May 2005: Clothes on ebay??
By Reds9298 on Monday, May 30, 2005 - 05:30 pm:

Have any of you ever sold clothes on Ebay? I have several suits and one formal dress(from a wedding) that I would like to get rid of, but would also like to get a little $ from if I can. They are new, like only been worn once kind of thing. Would it be worth it to try them on ebay? If not, do you have any other suggestions?
Unfortunately, I don't know anyone else whose my size that would use them. If I did I'd just give them away.
Any suggestions and/or experiences with clothes on ebay?
TIA

I've only sold kids' clothes on Ebay, but I've had good success with it. If you have nice clothing (is it designer?) in good condition you should be able to get something for it. If you list the clothing, I find that I have more bids, and a higher sale price if I start dirt cheap. Also, I have better success with flat rate shipping. I only use priority mail on my auctions, and post a flat rate shipping fee that is "average" (take a zip code across the country, and use the shipping calculator from USPS) plus a very small handling fee to cover my packing materials. You can use an image hosting site like Imageshack.us to add more photos for free, but you have to know the HTML code to insert them. (Let me know if you want the code) Basically, be as descriptive as possible, and since the items are nearly brand new make sure you put "Like New" or something in the title. When I'm shopping for clothes I won't even bother if the title doesn't catch me, and usually I have to see a gallery preview picture before I'll open it, so gallery is well worth the 35 cents. :)

I sold a pair of nursing shoes and a scrub top, once upon a time. The first time we put the shoes on, we charged too much and they didn't go. I agree with Crystal, start low and let the market bring the price higher.

You could also do a search on ebay for exactly what you have and see 1) if what you have is a hot seller and 2) how much it is selling for. That may help you decide if you want to list what you have!

Good luck!

If your item is not NEW do NOT put new in the title - that is key word spamming and your auction could get pulled by Ebay.

As long as you set you price at a reasonable level and describe acurately, include decent pictures and have something people would want (like a good brand) you should do just fine.

You certainly can list as like new or in excellent condition as long as this is accurate. Be as descriptive as possible IS good advice. You want to go over the clothing as thouroughly as possible to make sure there are no flaws. I sold new clothes for several years on ebay and the better you describe the less emails you receive with questions. Pictures are vital. I would also list all possible measurements (bust, waist, hips, length). Measure the item flat side to side and explain that is how it was measured (so buyer knows they must be smaller than that measurement for item to fit). Make your policy clear in ad (example no returns, shipping amount, payment must be received within x amount of days, etc).
I have sold clothes, an armoire, a boat, a jetski, and various books on ebay. I have taught my friends and family to do the same. My brother has a successful business on ebay. My biggest advice is give as much info as possible and take clear pictures. Good luck getting rid of your stuff and making some extra $$ If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Claire, have you had auctions pulled? I've had multiple auctions with "Like new", or NWOT (in the event the item actually was new) without problem. There is nothing in Ebay's selling policy that goes against that. I'm not sure why you feel being descriptive as possible is bad, my experiences as a seller and buyer have been that the more descriptive you are the better, like mentioning if there is a small pull in the fabric, or the detailing of the item.

Crystal - I am *so* sorry I was posting on little to no sleep. I have a horrible cold. I edited my post - and I *am* really sorry :( the combination of cold medicine, the actual cold and a 3 year old screaming all night made me too tired to read correctly :(

If your item is NWOT then yes it's fine to put that in your title - but you are not allowed to put "like new" in your auction title because they consider it key word spamming because someone looking for new clothing could pull up your auction in their search - they call it keyword search manipulation because your item is NOT new.

If they catch it or someone turns you in they WILL pull the auction. It has not happened to me, but it has happened to people I know.

Claire, it's quite ok... I've had a few moments like that, where the cloud of cold meds, and lack of sleep made me loopy!! I've never had problems with "Like New", but thanks for letting me know.
