Grinding coffee beans

Well, I bought myself a coffee bean grinder today. Mostly because I accidently bought the whole beans at the store instead of the preground ones. I just don't know how much to grind to make a pot of coffee!! Do you just scoop out the same amount of the beans that you would of coffee? Like say my scoop for grounds is 1/3 cup, do I ground up 1/3 cup of beans???

My grinder is the small Krups one. I just dump the beans in and grind it and it usually comes out to a full pot.
I would grind some beans and then measure it out to see what your holds.

I use a 2 - 3 cup french press and I use 4-5 scoops of beans per pot. I like my coffee very strong though.

We have a Bunn burr-type bean grinder. It has a dial for specific cup amounts of coffee. You can also adjust the grind finer or courser, and of course, depending on how you like your coffee, use more or less than the pre-set cup amounts. It's pretty much a matter of taste. After a few pots, you will know how much you need.

I don't drink coffee but often make my son's coffee if he is running late in the morning. He grinds his beans, and uses a scoop to measure the ground coffee. The scoop is about 1 tablespoon, so you'd use 1 tablespoon (more or less, depending on how strong you like it) of ground coffee. I find it takes about 1-1/2 scoopes (or 1-1/2 tablespoons) of unground beans to make 1 scoop or tablespoon of ground coffee. Still, I think you had better experiment, using a measuring spoon or scoop to measure the ground coffee, until you find out what measure of beans you need to make a pot of coffee the strength you prefer.

Thanks ladies! I did make a trial pot this afternoon and used my normal coffee scoop and measured the beans equal to the amount of grounds that I would have used. It was a little weak for me. So I am guessing (as Ginny pointed out) that it takes a little more beans. I will try one and a half scoops next time and adjust from there. I will say that there is a HUGE difference between using already ground coffee and grinding your beans. May be the best mistake I ever made (buying beans instead). The coffee is so much better!!!

That's what my son says, Vicki. And, by the way, he says the best coffee he has found is at Trader Joes, and it costs less than most supermarket coffee.

and Trader Joes is shade grown as well as fair trade.

and it's pretty good coffee!

Costco brand coffee is roasted by starbucks and is really really good and much cheaper. After grinding,we usually put in about 10-17 tbls for about 8 cups every morning. We like it strong though!
