Periods and swimming... (may be TMI)
This is bugging me, and I don't want to poll my co-workers, so you ladies are it! My 15 yr old dd spent a weekend with her dad and stepmom, and while there, she got her period. They were staying at a hotel, and she'd wanted to go swimming. Her stepmom told her to go ahead and swim, that it was no big deal (she wasn't "heavy" yet). When my dd told me that, I told her no, that wasn't good, and that she should either learn to use tampons or sit out. I never thought this was an issue...I assumed all women felt the way I did! So I'm wondering what others' opinions on this are.
I'm the "use a tampon or sit out" type of person. It's very unsanitary to swim otherwise. When I was 16 I learned to use a tampon just for that purpose. I loved swimming during the summer.
At first I didn't swim and then a friend and I read the instructions and learned how to wear a tampon. My mother would not let me use them. I think that she was disturbed by it or something. But I did have a friend who if she wasn't heavy would swim while on her period. At the time she told me the water pressure held it in and when you get out it would be heavy for a bit. I don't know if there is any truth to that but she never had any problems when we swam together while she was on her period.
My mom always told me that the water made it stop. Then when you got out, it would start again, it would just be a little heavy. I wear a tampon now when I do swim.
Julie and Rayanne, that's just what my dd told me her stepmom told her! I'd never, ever heard that one...
I have a friend who is an ob/gyne nurse, and she also said it stops when you're swimming. I've never tried it, and haven't told my daughter that info. I'd rather she learns to use a tampon, because it would be awfully embarrassing if it didn't work that way!
I was always told the water stopped it too. I have finished swimming and found I had started, but never leaked in the pool.
I was always told that it stops when you are in the water also.
I was told it stopped when in the pool so I always went swimming. Same thing as when we take a hot bath when on it stoppes then too right!!
use a tampon. I would die if I had nothing on in a public pool and got out and it started running down my leg. that would be my greatest fear.
use a tampon, I am w/ my2, would absolutely DIE if that were to happen
I would never go swimming without a tampon. It's unsanitary. Your period doesn't always stop in water, I've started bleeding in baths. It's blood, so even if there is a small risk of it leaking, it is unhealthy to just take that chance, IMO.
This is really interesting, isn't it? I've just never thought about it. I think I'll stick with my tampon advice. Hopefully, dd will listen to her mom! (I'd die, too, if I got out of the pool and it ran down my leg..talk about embarassing!!)
As a teen, before I started using tampons, I always went swimming because I was told it stops in the water. Never thought twice about it at the time, but I'd never swim without a tampon now!
The whole reason I started using tampons was so that I could go swimming. I cannot imagine someone going without one!!! Better safe than sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reds, I was like you.
I've never heard that it stops in water, although mine always stops when I'm asleep. I always use a tampon when swimming. My mom wasn't comfortable with me using tampons when I was younger, except when I was swimming. I don't think I'd take the chance of there being some "leakage".
I've heard it stops in the water too but it never did for me. I tried taking a bath once hoping that story was true and i'll just say it was sooooooo not true. Even the bathes I took when I didnt leak, as soon as I got out, it started running down my leg. Could you imagine that happening in public? How embarrassing!
I use a tampon and so do my girls.
And now I am grossed out because there are women out there that dont, EW
Ummmm...I can't wear tampons at all. However, I usually try to plan trips to the beach and pool parties around my period, but sometimes it's just not possible. At the beach I will wear a pantyliner long enough to play with my boys just a tiny bit on the beach (if I'm light), but there's no way I would get in the water otherwise, esp. at my heavy time of the month. When your period is gonna come, it's gonna come whether you are in the water or not. As for "ewww gross" our womanly parts are self-cleansing, so there is an almost constant normal vaginal discharge even when swimming. Or what about people with genital herpes? Those sores are external. There's plenty of other gross stuff in the water.
OH youre killin me I just dont wanna know LOL
Tampon here, too. DD learned to use a tampon for this very reason last year. I heard a comedian on my xm radio make this joke, not verbatum and it is kind of gross. I have never forgotten it though.... What do you get with six women in a hot tub???? Vagina soup! EEEwwww, I know it's gross but true.
That is why public pools add LOTS of chlorine!
LOL!
Tampons or no swimming for me. My mom wouldn't even let me take a bath when I had my period as a teen. I had to shower. My mom told me that even getting in the tub of water could give me an infection that might make me die. And Heaven forbid I should even think of swimming while on my period. Glad I got passed that piec of info.
I don't like tampons very much so I just stay out of the water.
