Diabetes in *older* kids???

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive April 2005: Diabetes in *older* kids???

Jen is being screened/tested for diabetes. There is a history of it in her Dad's family, and she has been tested previously. But she has been getting a lot of yeast infections, and feeling *bad* for a while, increased thirst, dizzy spells, etc.

She spent most of the night a few nights ago in the ER because her GYN refused to see her when she called - she was miserable and they would only call in meds for the yeast infection,l but she was having a lot of pain too. The ER doc took blood and her sugar was very high and there was sugar in her urine.

She's *supposed* to go today for fasting blood work and a glucose tolerance test, but knowing Jen, she will put it off.

Anyone have any experience with *older* kids and diabetes??? I know very little about this.

My sons preschool teacher was diagnosed with juv diabetes when she was 27, so it can happen.

Karen tell Jen to get the test done, both my SIL's were diagnosed with diabetes in their late 20's.
There is a history of it in DH's family. Better to have the test so if thats what it is it can be treated.

A friend of ours son was diagnosed with juevenille diabetes in high school.
If she is getting alot of yeast infections have her cut out bread for a while and take acidolphillus.

She must absolutely get the test, given the symptoms of high sugar in her urine and increased thirst. Diabetes or possible or potential diabetes is nothing to mess with!

Karen, I lived with a girl that had too give herself a shot everyday.

One of my best friends that I grew up with (sort of) she was diagnosed in her 20's and now has to give herself shots as well.... It is very serious !!! I hope she doesnt put it off.

She's on her way to the hospital now. She's starving. LOL

She doesn't eat bread, and she does take acidolphillus and pro-biotics daily.

She sees the doctor again on May 4, so I guess we will know by then.
