Freecycle...again
So do you think people ask for too much? I mean I believe it never "hurts" to ask.. but sometimes I cant believe the things people ask for. One example that I see ALL the time is.. "Im expecting a baby.., Im in need of a crib, diapers, changing table, clothes etc.. These post come all the time..I guess my problem is I dont know if people really are "in need" or just dont want to spend the money. There are a ton of thrift stores in the area where things can be purchased for very cheap.. Or the other thing is that people are always asking for beds.. what do people ask for the most on your freecycle sites?
It's quite interesting though...we DO get a lot of OFFERS for beds, etc. Maybe not cribs or anything like that, but it's all in the timing I think.
I don't know what freecycle is????
FreeCycle.org I'm a fairly new member to two FreeCycle groups in my area. So far I've just been reading the posts and getting a feel for things. So far people haven't been asking for anything unreasonable. Lots of offers but so far nothing that has caught my interest.
I have seen all sorts of insane requests, it seems like people want everything supplied to them for a baby, or they want a new aquarium with all the furnishings, a working washer and dryer, etc.
I see all kinds of Wanteds, have seen many requests for newer lap tops running windows xp, just today there was a wanted for a 15' trampoline in excellent condition MUST have the mesh enclosure...
Doesn't hurt to ask I guess. I just ignore those posts. But who knows, maybe there's a desperate person out there with a 15' trampoline with mesh who desperately wants to get rid of the thing?
LOL...i had neighbors whose 12 year old son jumped out their second story window onto their 15 foot trampoline. They gave it away the next day, so ya never know! (He was fine, but parents decided if he was that stupid once they couldn't chance it!)
No lie, this was in our Freecycle today. I copied and pasted word for word. "i need wall paintand glitter so that my kids could paint and decarete there walls in there rooms any color of the rainbow would work, but mostly pink, green, brown, tan, blue, orange, yellow, gray, purple, black, red, white, violet,or if you have any other colors or they want o no if you have any glow in the dark wall pant. we'll if u do e-mail me " I nearly fell over laughing after we'd been discussing this here.
Folks ask for pretty lavish things on our local Freecycle. I guess it doesn't hurt to ask. I'm not inclined to simply donate to anyone who asks though.
There are really very poor people out there. I just met one whose husband died and her mil can't wait for her to move. She has no skills and two kids...
Cori, Shylah posted on her blog about that same request. Apparently, y'all also had someone asking "excilopedias" or some other horrible misspelling similar to that. LOL
People on mine offer opened food and broken stuff all the time, claiming they can be used for parts. Lots of offers for half used lotion and shampoos, and even half a box of men's hair regrowth stuff. My personal favorite was the woman offering half a box of Kotex maxi pads. And yes, they were taken! How desperate can you be?? I mean you don't save any money by getting half a box of something when you have to DRIVE to someone else's house and before that you have to take the time to make arrangements and take the time to drive over there, etc.! It has to be something really big, or really rare, to get my interest. Even then it has to be close enough to not be a hassle to go pick up.
I think the biggest request that has been on my Freecycle is for a horse. Mostly though the requests aren't to bad.
On my freecycle...I've had people post cars to give away granted they're older cars but they say they're running etc. I think the one that made me laugh the most was the guy who posted that he had fish and everything to give away and then a few days later was asking for fish. We too get people asking for things like everything you need for a baby which I don't know maybe they are desperately in need and can't afford it...but why get pregnant then? (maybe that's harsh) I guess it doesn't hurt to ask but you just never know.
Ask for the moon and maybe you'll get the stars?
Ah, Janet, you've put such a romantic twist to the topic......
In Roswell GA we had a builder post three houses. He was developing the property and he posted the three houses to anyone who would move them. Someone posted for them, they were promised and another builder came and took them away! Yes, three, older little brick houses to a builder from a builder for free, come and get 'em! We have had two car posts. Funny, the things that happen on Freecycle. MM
I don't do freecycle but it seems to me that if you need something why not ask for it. If people have stuff that they would like to pass on and are willing to give it to strangers, I don't see a harm in asking for what you need. I don't think that you have to be in "desperate" need of money to be willing to use 2nd hand stuff. Isn't that what the freecycle is all about anyway?
