Sick dog - not too sick

Poor Sascha has colitis. When I came home yesterday she had pooped, fortunately on a throw rug, which she has never, never done. When I took her out it was clear she had diarrhea. Later it turned to liquid, and again this morning. My son HAD to go to work - there are some really stressful things going on. So I said I'd call the vet and if the vet said to, I'd take her in - knowing that with my lovely bosses and really nice place to work that it would be OK.

The vet said to bring her in, so I made a 10 a.m. appointment, and really glad I did, because the next time I walked her she was passing a little blood. The vet checked her carefull and because I took a sample in, checked the sample too, and said she has colitis. That she probably ate something like rabbit poop or a dead chipmunk, and it is irritating her digestive system. So, she is on an antibiotic twice a day and a diet of 1 part cooked chopped chicken to 3 parts cooked white rice. As long as she eats, drinks, doesn't vomit, the vet says there is nothing to worry about.

After I brought her home I reported to my son, and then, after walking her again and thinking about it, called my bosses and asked them to be really truthful as to whether there is anything urgent or if I can stay home today without upsetting things. As I explained, I really did not want to leave a 110# dog with diarrhea home alone the rest of the day. Being the sweethearts they are, my bosses said stay home by all means.

Poor Sascha, she is just lying in the doorway watching me, and if she has to go out she will whimper. But, the vet gave me some canned food for her until I get to the store, and she ate and had her first dose of antibiotic. I'm sure she will be alright, but oh, poor baby.

Uggh. I just went through this with my dogs, except one of them was throwing up, too. One of them is back on a regular diet and hopefully the other will be on a regular dog food by tomorrow. I think we still have 3 days of antibiotic to go. I have been rolling canned dog food into little meatballs to put their pills in since Thursday, too. My DH was not too happy that I had to cook them hamburger and rice for several days. I tried to figure out what they could have gotten into and searched the backyard for signs of the deer or other animals but nothing. The only thing that changed was we opened a new bag of dog food. The vet thinks it could be contaminated and advised us to throw it out. After doing some research online it sounds like some pretty gross stuff goes into dog food. I sent an email to the company. I hope Sascha is doing better soon.

I just went through something similar about a week or so ago with our dog. She had gotten into the kittens food and went to town!! Not good!! I called the vet and they said I could give her pepto bismol (sp?) so I went and got some and that made her throw up!! So I had double the mess!! I fed her boiled chicken and white rice for about 3 days until she was better. So gross. I hope your dog gets better faster than mine did!

Poor baby. I hope she gets better soon.
My Holly had the runs last week.
Not fun with a pup who isn't housetrained yet!

Poor thing, I hope she's feeling better! There were a couple times my parent's german shepard was on that special rice diet, probably for the same ailment. (He LOVED to chase squirrels on our property, must have caught a few!)

She is doing much better, thank you. Turns out I could have gone to work after all, as she didn't have to go at all after I walked her when we got home from the vet. I gave her the first dose of antibiotic then and the special food. She was fine all afternoon, and this evening gobbled up the boiled chicken and rice like there was no tomorrow - which is how she eats anything. She is much more playful, and seems to be feeling just fine. I will have no qualms about leaving her home alone tomorrow.
