Has anyone toilet trained their cat?
We just got 2 new kitties and are thinking of toilet training them. Has anyone ever trained their cat to go in the toilet? If so, how was it?
We've never toilet trained but we did have a cat while my Mom was pregnant with my little brother who followed my Mom to the bathroom every night when my Mom woke up to pee. One night she heard peeing and got up thinking it was one of us kids. She walked in the bathroom to find our cat peeing in the toilet. The cat still used the litter box but we'd occasionally find him peeing in the toilet. It was quite a sight!
I don't think I'd want my cat using my toilet.
We thought about trying this years ago but decided against it. I'm like Colette, didn't want to share the toilet with our cats. LOL!
I know it can be done because my son did it. I think there is a special pan you buy that fits in the toilet seat and you start with a small amount of litter, gradually decreasing the litter. I'll ask Scott tonight, but why not google toilet +training +cat and see what comes up. Of course, they have to be able to get up to the toilet, and I don't know that I'd do it with kittens because I'd be concerned about them falling in. And, of course, you can't teach them to flush!
Actually I think you can teach them to flush, at least I think I have seen some cats on tv that do flush. I still wouldnt want to share my toliet w/ a cat, I have enough problems w/ the seat not being dry w/ the 4 boys, I dont need to add a cat into the mix.
My grandma had a cat when I was growing up that was toilet trained. Not sure how they taught him to go in the toilet, but it is possible. I don't remember if he flushed or not, it was a long time ago. Good luck.
No, but we've talked about it lol. It would be delightful to get rid of the litter box. I wouldn't want to clean up the accidents though if he "missed" or made a mess on/in the toilet. I think that would be worse than scooping out the litter box.
Thanks everyone for your input. It was DH's idea to train the cats and the process began today. Sure there are disadvantages to having a cat use the toilet, but there are many advantages as well, such as the money saved on the kitty litter and not finding the litter all over my floor! And if a cat makes a mess on the seat...well, you know who's job it would be to clean it! ;) I put some pictures of my new kitties in the Photo Sharing area if you want to see them.
