Eye Drops for 3 year old! Help!
Does anybody have any advice for putting eye drops in a three year olds eyes? Luke has an eye infection (not pink eye) & needs these drops 4x a day for 10 days! We're on the 3rd dose & I can't get his eye even open. After the first drop yesterday he was on to me! LOL Last night Dh helped, but I'm on my own to get them in for at least 2 doses a day! This is going to be a long 10 days! He's also on an oral antibiotic b/c he started to develop a skin infection UNDER the eyes! Will they ever get well?!?!?!??! Thanks!
No suggestions for you. Dd got pink eye once, but she was about 5 or 6 and was very good about letting me put the ointment in her eye. I hope it gets better soon.
Yes, just talked to the pediatrition about it last week. Have him lay on his back and close his eyes. Then put the drops in the inner corner of his eye. Put the recommended amount of drops. Have him blink his eyes and the drops will go in. Hope that helps.
I wrapped Emily in a beach towel, with her arms at her sides. Then straddled her. I could anchor down a wiggly head and do eye drops, with 2 hands, by myself, but I couldn't stop the arms, too. DH wasn't always there to help. So, I took her arms out of the equation. She wasn't too happy, but she needed the drops and that is what I had to do! I felt mean, but it was only for a moment! (don't miss pinkeye days!)
Andi's way is the same way I have done it with my kids. My older son has had pink eye countless times, and that was always the best method. Good luck!!
I remember, when my kids had pinkeye. I laid the child on the floor, put my legs over his shoulders and held his head between my thighs, got the medicine ready, one hand to hold the eye open and one hand to put the medicine in. What a hassle! But it worked.
The way I do it is similar to Andi's way except I have the child lie on their side and put the drops on the outer corner then blink and they run down across the eye as they blink. After a couple of minutes roll to the other side and do the other eye. I'm with your child. I absolutely hate to lie there and watch that drop coming toward my eye. Can't do it.
Thanks Everyone! We tried the corner of the eye method & it worked!! Happy Mommy dance! He still doesn't look forward to the drops, but they're bearable now! Thanks a million! Karrie
WOW!!! What a novel idea. We just went through a pink eye fest here with battles over eye drops. Hopefully I will not have to try this method! LOL Thanks so much for this post! For myself, also. I hate eye drops!
