Safe media storage ideas?
Does anyone know the best way to safely store things like cd's with photos and video camera tapes and protect them from fire? That's my main concern - fire. We purchased a safe at Christmas that we thought we would only use for media that's important to us (wedding, baby, etc.) but then found out that the moisture/humidity that accumulates inside a regular fire safe is damaging to media content and isn't protected up toa certain degree so we returned it. I've done some research online about other safes that *are* for media protection, but they start at like $400!!! What do you all do with your tapes /negatives/photo cd's to protect them in case of fire? Do you have any other ideas? I'm definitely not able to shell out $400 right now for this, so I'm considering just taking out a lock box at the bank - I'm a little paranoid I guess! In a fire I could lose everything but my memories are the most important.
This is similar to what I've found - sooo expensive! Other brands have been similar in style and price. http://www.sentrysafe.com/Series.asp?r=5
I have a safe deposit box that I have some stuff in. Also I make sure family has copies of some stuff, so that in event of a fire I wouldn't lose EVERYTHING!
Kaye has it right - both a safe deposit box at the bank, and give copies to a trusted relative. I keep things like this in a desk drawer at my office - the one that is considered the "private" drawer by all the staff.
